Hello 'nanakess' My kitchen has those small brown beetles that you uploaded a picture of on 19th september 2010. I have completely scrubbed and tidied my kitchen countless times but they won't go away. I was wondering if you know what they are called or how to get rid of them? Thank you

I am sorry to say, but using cooking oil for quieting a squeaky door is not good after some time as a cooking oil will get thicker and get sticky, therefore will glue the system. Instead, you may use the lead of a pencil.
Just sharpen a black pencil and get the black lead dust. Remove the door from its hinges, pour the lead dust in it and replace the door! No more noise, but some black dust on the floor. Another idea is to put some talcum power. Lead and talc are mineral, not organic like cooking oil.
Editor's Note: Pencil "lead" is graphite, also a mineral.

Try Goo Gone, works like a charm and won't harm the fabric or it's elasticity. Make sure the fabric is colorfast by trying it on an inside seam first. If it is not, try the lard and then hand wash the spot with dawn or the like. Good Luck!

Training programmes can be found through your local tax payer supported parks and recreation services, the fees are usually reasonable and the dogs learn to be 'good citizens'.
Professional dog training companies can be found through your local business directory (phone book or business registry). These are expensive and you have to be careful the programmes don't use fear and physical violence as part of the training programme.
You can also use your preferred search engine to run a search for free online training information. I like the following site for good, humane training tips:
http://dogs.about.com/od/dogtrainin ... ssential-Steps-To-Train-Your-Dog.htm
The other pages at that site are fantastic for all kinds of great tips on being a good dog owner. Plus there is a free-to-join forum so you can 'talk' to other dog owners about every aspect of being a good dog owner.
Please update and let us know how you both are getting along in your new life together:)

Oh, he's so young . Try putting a battery powered ticking clock inside the bed - maybe put it inside a hot water bottle cover - this will mimic the sound of his mother's beating heart. This may help. I'm sure I'd be like you & want to cuddle him for reassurance but as he gets older maybe cut the cuddles down a bit so he doesn't rely on you so much. Don't fall into the trap of letting him sleep in your bed , super bad idea !

I did a revow for my sister in Tucson in 02 for just about what you have. It can be done, I promise.
The dress was $50.00 but you say you have one. Great! Is there a thrift shop close where your hubby can get a suit? Or perhaps borrow one?
Here are the things I did to pull this off...
Her colors were for spring, which left everything else much easier. The "aisle" inside the church was 8/$1.00 pastel bags from the dollar tree, with contrasting colors of tissue paper inside each one, pulled up to show of course. In other words, pink in the yellow, yellow in the blue, etc. We simply weighed each one down with a zip lock of cat litter and down the aisle she walked.
I found some spring wrapping paper that had pretty pastel circles on it, and cut them out for table scatter. Each table had to glass brandy snifter with colored water and a floating candle in it. Each chair had a bow on the back to match the color of water.
A friend made the cake, and I made mini teddies for the topper.
I made a guest book and a pen out of a half a Styrofoam ball glued onto a tuna can. Each was covered in lace, then the pen rested in a cap from a seam ripper that I shoved down inside - I kid you not.
I made a poem and burned the edges then glued it to a pillar candle from the Dollar Tree, and stuck in pretty pearl straight pins around the edges for the unity set.
We decorated a donated arch with flowers from the Easter stash, and I made all the flowers either from crochet thread or from the thrift stores. I re-purposed her veil and then went about to cook.
We have a hot day to work in, so I chose cool foods. I made tuna and chicken salad sandwiches, pasta salad, veggie plate, food colored parfaits, and we had four kinds of soda with coffee and tea.
It was a lovely day and we did pull it off for just around $275.00. I hope this helps. If you need any thing else, please don't hesitate to leave me a message through TF as we have some time.
Best of luck to you both.

I have the same problem. It can be caused by a lot of different things like molds or insects. There is an insect really tiny that bites I think if I remember is called nuseem or something like that is so small it can go through window screens. I have found that using peppermint oil and eucalyptus can help relieve the itch and citronella candles can help repel them. I discovered by accident that a 40 ounce of beer left out, that unwashed seems to attract them and when they drink it the alcohol kills them.hope thishelps

I am sending a link about housetraining boxers:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5030152_housetrain-boxer.html
Then, of course, any behavior changes involve needing to go to the vet if they are different than usual.
After you get a clean bill of health from the vet, then I would look at the food and the type of feeding you have set up.
Are you feeding food full of fillers like corn and by products? Most of these foods are worthless and all they do is make poop.
I would go and up the quality of dog food. I would go with diamond foods or 4 health foods, or any of the other dog foods that have no by products wheat or soy.
You won't find this from your vet as they don't really know about this kind of thing unless they have studied dog nutrition.
Are you feeding free choice? This means your dogs guts are always full. I do this too, but I also let them out any time of the day or night.
Hope that any of this helps, Blessings,
I love boxers!

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but the only thing that makes sense in your recipe is the essential oil. Vinegar is an acid. Baking soda is a base. You mix an acid and a base, and you get hydrogen gas (that's the source of the fun bubbles) and salt water. Not salt as in sodium chloride, but it will be a salt water solution. Do you really think that using salt water is an effective fabric softener? If so, why not just make up some homemade salt water (or go to the beach--salt water there is free) and dump it on in?

OH MY WORD! Never having an issue with our industrial garbage disposal, I put 2 artichokes that were unraveled and fully cooked down there and turned it on. Not thinking anything of it, it clogged I thought I had broken it. But when I realized the disposal worked and it was just clogged, I had no idea what to do. I was going to call a professional in 2 days then thought, "Hey, I am going to look online and see if I can do it." So, I clicked on this website and read the posts on the vinegar and baking soda and boiling hot water. I figured what do I have to loose but an already clogged disposal. After I plunged it to clear the water out GUESS WHAT? It's unclogged! Thank you so much, now I don't have to call a professional. So stoked :) Thank you guys for posting that!

An interesting and well written entry. Thank you for sharing with us.
Due to invasive Burmuda grass, I am forced to grow many things in containers. Besides the drainage holes you mentioned, the growing medium itself is very important. I have found that for best results, the soil for container grown plants should be highly amended with Perlite or an equivalent. Before I learned this lesson, I lost many plants to improper drainage - not due to lack of adequate drainage holes, but due to the soil itself retaining too much water.

I saw a lot of things that are where you can travel cheaper and go places on the cheap, but they are all spending money. AARP is not all that good for discounts and you have to pay to join. I found better information in pcgranny's post, especially for prescription help and such. That is a big concern for the seniors of today. Some have to choose between the meds and food. It is more prevalent than must realize. There is also a way to get you taxes reduced on your land and that is to get the assessment lowered first and then go to grievance day to get your land taxes down. That is very important as well. It is hard to keep up with all the expenses when you are a senior and I find myself going to the lower priced stores where you take your own bags and the prices are much lower there (like at Aldi's and Price Right) than the bigger brand stores. I have also learned to make leftovers into different meals. This past week we had company drop in and I fixed a veggie platter with dip and also a cheese platter for us to munch on. The next day, the left over veggies and some of the zucchini squash we had for dinner along with some boiled potatoes and green beans that were part of our dinner (canned ones and a real bargain at a local Mennonite store) went into a batch of browned ground beef and onions. I added a can of diced tomatoes, a can of chicken stock and some seasonings and that made a tasty vegetable soup that we were able to share in a potluck and still had some for lunch the next day. The cheese plate is going to be shredded up and put into my mac and cheese tomorrow night. Left over scalloped potatoes and ham? Warm them, mash them up a bit,and add some sliced carrots or canned carrots, some celery and more onion and some chicken stock, cook until all is tender and add a touch of milk and you have a delicious potato soup. It is all about being innovative and making something out of nothing. Pot luck dinners are a wonderful way of stretching your food dollar as well if you are in a community where others want to stretch their food dollars as well.

Clean the area that is stained with saddle soap. Apply the saddle soap with a soft cloth and follow label instructions on the saddle soap. If the saddle soap is glycerin based then spray directly onto the leather.
Then put on a shea butter based conditioner using a soft cloth in circular motions. Do this twice a year if it is exposed to the elements frequently. Once a year otherwise.
Spray your black leather suitcase with a water repellent product designed only for leather. This will make spills bead up and not soak in the leather.

Hello !
If the plant is covered with aphids treat it quickly with a pesticide. Ants can also signal a scale invasion. Take a look at the bark of the honeysuckle. What you believe to be a crusty bark can be hundreds of scales infesting your plant. Take a toothpick and try to push or rub off these "marks" if they drops off the wood easily it is a scale invasion. Use oily pesticide against the scales. You should try to find out what type is your honeysucle as it needs to be pruned at the right time according to its type either after the flowering period in summer or before spring. But it can't be pruned in spring. Pruning now would make the plant produce new shoots from its base and if it is an aphid infection it would only provide new fresh food for the aphids. Honeysuckle vines are very resistant and it should be able to resist aphids or scale invasion so you should check its conditions (enough shade, enough water but well drained ect).
Hope this help !

Hello !
Do you believe it ? The Ohio State University is providing you with a full page of information. Titled of the page is " Growing Rhododendrons and Azaleas in Ohio " and it is here : http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1078.html
What more do you need ? Maybe just this about plants in full bloom sold for Mother's day or any other big date. To force full bloom at a given time plants are usually either "heated" or kept in darkness and suddenly exposed to full light 24 hours a day or overdosed with fertilisers. Your Azalea may also be potted with coconut fibers only. This type of soil can provide nutriments for the plants for a few weeks only. Once you have found its future place in your garden let the plant stay in water at room temperature until it is completely soaked take the plant out of the water, throw the water away and repeat the process. This way you will get rid of the extra fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing during the first year. If your Azalea is in a suited place in your garden with the proper soil and receives the right amount of water it will not need fertilizer.
Good luck !

I made a bonehead move and made a lazy/horrible decision to put sweet potato peels in my garbage disposal......CLOG! I found this forum and used the vinegar, baking soda, boiling water, and plunger solution on here and it worked!! No need to call a plumber and spend $200 or more dollars on it. Before you call a plumber, try this first. It worked for me and was easy. I recommend putting water in the non-clogged side and use a stopper in it while you plunge the clogged side. You can hear the "swoosh" sound of the drain flow once you've plunged enough.

I was bombarded with ants around my fridge about two weeks ago. I took a piece of peppermint candy and set it on the floor where they were crawling around. In about three hours, the peppermint was covered with the ants. It looked disgusting. So peppermint does NOT deter them. I read here on thrifty fun once to take a lemon scented dusting spray where you see them and around the baseboards where they can be getting in. I sprayed them and the baseboards last Monday. It's been a week, and I haven't seen any more ants in the house yet. Hopefully it stays that way.

If you're talking about the Royal Mail, the best chance you have for sorting this (although with the Royal Mail, bless them, it's not a very good chance this will work) is to take your proof of medical incapacitation and any tracking numbers, etc, to the local post office and ask to speak with a supervisor.
The most important thing to remember when asking a postie to go the extra mile is to stay calm and keep repeating you know you are asking a lot and are so grateful for all the hard work they do with so little appreciation. Don't go 'overboard' but being extra nice when asking a postie for anything seems to work a lot of the time.
Plan to make your visit during a not-so-busy time for the counter clerks, and don't go anywhere near the post office with a special request too close to tea-time. I learned that one the hard way:(
I live in Scotland and have come to understand sometimes this works when dealing with 'special requests' to the Royal Mail. Not always, but with your medical paperwork and an extra helping of niceness it's possible your local will help you out.

Frogheaven is on the right track.
But if those tips don't help it may be that you have a broken or worn out bobbin gear and that's a job for a professional repairman. He or she will be able to remove the cover of your machine and tell just by looking what is wrong, and will have the part(s) needed to fix it quickly.
It shouldn't be very expensive even if you ask him/her to do a general maintenance and check-over of the machine.

I used uncooked grits when I lived in AL, FL, and GA from 1982-2010 (I live in the UK now). I sprinkled a good handful atop the mound, repeated if it rained.
It didn't really kill so much as drive the swarm out of my yard-they'd move the mound ten or 15 feet away, I'd sprinkle more uncooked grits; they'd move, I'd sprinkle...until they moved right out of the entire half acre of lawn and garden.
Another thing you can do is contact your local co-operative extension office or find their webpages online. The online pages will have lots of information on how to handle fire ants in your specific area.
Not as cheap as grits, or the cornmeal suggestion posted by the previous poster, though:)

You can put rocks around the plant in the pot - as many rocks as you need to completely cover the soil. OR, you can get a roll of "garden fence" in various colors and cut a piece to fit the top of your pot. Cut a slit in the fencing, so that you can place it around your plant, and lay it on top of the soil or staple it to the rim of the pot.

Are you in or near Dubai? Most of the chemists there stock a product called boric acid-tell them you want it to get rid of the roaches and keep them out of your home. They'll know what you want and will probably also give you good advice on using the product successfully.
I don't know if a chemist outside of Dubai will stock boric acid but if you aren't near there you can try at your local chemist or pharmacy.
It works GREAT to kill roaches and to keep them from coming back. Follow the directions on the label if the chemist doesn't give you advice on the best way to use it for pest control.

My son is a chef in the US. When I go over to visit (I live in the UK) I think he's thrilled to see me mainly because I can get his chef whites so clean:)
He inherited his parents eczema, too-yeppers, his dad and I both have mild-moderate eczema. So I feel your pain on getting those whites clean. Here's how I get his chef whites clean of grease, fats, and odors without triggering an eczema flare:
I add OxyClean to the laundry soap and set the washer for a long soak to be followed by the hot wash programme+the extra rinse feature.
Because of his eczema, after the first wash+extra rinse programme is complete, I then run the washer again using the same hot wash+extra rinse programming. The second programme rids the fabric of any soap and OxyClean residue, but to be sure I make a point of checking the condition of the water-if soapy water is sloshing against the front load washer window at any point during the last rinse, I know I need to run yet another full programme to completely rid the whites of residue (and that maybe I need to cut back a bit on the cleaning products next time I have a set of whites wanting a good wash to avoid needing that third programme!)
Nice, bright, stain and odor free:) I hope this helps!

To remove sap with nail polish remover effectively you'd want to use a nail polish remover with acetone because the non-acetone won't even cut through price tag adhesive in my experience. You should test a very small area of the screen to see if the nail polish remover will remove the sap without melting the synthetic material the mesh is woven from-acetone can 'melt' plastics.
I think you'd have safer and better results using one of the automotive sap removing products. The car care products for removing sap from car finishes, windscreens, and headlamps (all car parts or finishes being made with synthetic polymers nowadays) will remove the sap easily without 'melting' your screen mesh.

Good to know should the occasion arise, but I avoid this to begin with by covering the entire mattress with a waterproof zippered cover that can be laundered should the need arise...which it did to me recently, on my new 12 inch memory foam mattress. Both are a bit bulky and large to stand up to dry, so I find a waterproof mattress cover is the best for me - and it only cost around $10 and is reusable.

The largest cost would be a location if you do not have it in your church or at a home. You could serve "renewal cake", ice cream and punch (alcoholic and nonalcoholic). Choose a time of day when a meal is not usually served, such as mid-afternoon, like 3pm. Select your place, and then price ice cream and cakes if you do not bake. Cupcakes and individual sized servings of ice cream may work the best. I would stick to chocolate and vanilla for both. Most people like one of these flavors. A punch of a 2 liter bottle ginger ale or 7-Up, 1 carton sherbet and 1can of reconstituted frozen orange juice or lemonade fills a standard punchbowl. Liquor can be added (about 1-2 cups) if wanted. I have used this punch recipe at an open house attended by about 100 people, and made and used 3 punch bowls full for it. Add coffee and tea, and you have it. Hope you have a nice party, and hope this helps.

I did it a little differently than the other person posted. I took end cuttings, put them in little pots with a good loose potting soil. I used Rootone as well to encourage root growth. I then placed all of the little pots in a tray inside a large clear plastic bag which I tied at the top after watering the cuttings. This was to maintain 100% humidity. That was in February here in California. I then placed them on a table near a window and never had to water them again. I now have rooted camellia plants that I am transplanting into bigger pots in the middle of May.
The first sign of root growth was the new leaves that the cuttings were putting out.
I don't remember where online that I read about doing this sort of thing but I just adapted the instructions to what I had at the time and it worked wonderfully well. Hopes this helps.

Many folks treat perfume like they are dynamiting fish. It is supposed to be subtle, make them want to come closer to identify it, not stun them at 30 paces. Right now, I have a problem. Brand new bra that I accidentally used scented arm and hammer on. I wash them in the sink and thought I had bought unscented laundry soap. I accidentally got "Clean Burst" instead. I have washed it in the sink over and over, and in the machine with baking soda. It still reeks. I can't wear it. I am going to try soaking it in a vinegar solution overnight and washing again. After that, if its not better, it goes to the Goodwill and I buy another brand new one. It reeks. I used my kid's nose to make sure its not just me and it gave him breathing problems immediately.

With 25 girls this is probably not the answer but years ago, with my daughter, I took them to a beauty school (pre-arranged) for a beauty treatments. It seems now a days that is not a treat for a lot of girls, but it could be an idea for another time or a smaller group....they could all get manicures,or something like that. More recently my daughter-in-law had a "spa" party in her home with different "beauty stations", mani's, pedi's, hairdo's, facials, makeup. She just got some high school girls who acted as beauticians. They took pictures later and put them in frames they had decorated while waiting for some of the "services". All felt very glamorous after it was all done, and oh yes they all brought special outfits to pose in. Your biggest problem is the number of girls involved. Good luck!

This is strickly my opinion but, I think probably they would only be valuable to a collector or to your local library.

Bonnie,
The Rid-A-Rat installed once by yourself will solve the problem. Perhaps with a major problem you might need 2. They ship their product all over.

How often would you recommend spraying the Pinesol to keep those pests away?

Well you can do a bonfire on the beach or a bbq, then play with a beach ball, paddle in the sea, put up a beach tent and stay there for a few hours.

Even considering using bug spray on your feeder is incomprehensible to me... bees are becoming endangered and should be protected. There are plastic caps available at most garden shops for a few bucks.

Thank you for a great post, my only problem would be that the computer would possibly be "acting stupid" when I needed to look something up, my luck. Lol, it is heck to get older and forgetful, parttimers I call it. Thanks again for the great idea.

I live in Portland too and Oaks Park is always a favorite. But with 25 girls that can also be very expensive. But there are the rides and roller skating maybe you could get a group rate on tickets or something.
If the weather is good you could go to a park and do outdoor activities.
I don't know what your budget is.
Sorry I can't come up with anymore suggestions

Your Vet is right on the money when he states that the recommendations on the bag is too much. This is also true for dog food recommendations. I feed my dogs less that stated. I noticed that they were getting too heavy. That was 6 months ago and they have slimmed down slowly to the weight they should be at. The pet food market is out sell pet food. This is over a billion dollar industry and they love to make as much money as they can on our pets. Don't be fooled it is all pet companies because that's ultimately what they are in business for, to make money for themselves and the shareholders. Find a good pet food and just feed a little less. Your pets will be healthier and live longer.

I've never heard of a manufacturer requiring the use of cold water. I wonder if you misunderstood.

There is web site called findagrave.com. You didn't mention his approximate age but if he has died and buried you may find information there. Also search his last name at those sites. Sometimes a memorial is listed and it oftentimes mentions relatives; where they lived and died and it may give you an idea of where he may live if still alive. Have you checked the sites like peoplesearch.com? Search by his last name and you may come up with a relative and these sites list all the cities of where they lived in the past. Keep us posted and we'll help if you give us more information.

If you are not already a member, join Facebook. Do a search for his name. If he is not a member, maybe a relative of his is. I have found a lot of relatives and lost friends on there.

I can't imagine any rental place NOT having a coffee urn. Any church in your community will probably have a large urn they may let you borrow. Maybe your Chamber of Commerce Office? Hotel/motel -- surely you can find one! Good luck and congrats on the wedding!

I have owned and used the Kitchen Craft and Lustre Craft waterless cookware for about 5 years now and it is in excellent condition and I am very happy that I originally invested in it.
I also have friends who have had their waterless cookware for around 40 years and they are still using it today and love it. It is very hard to come by such a high-quality and durable product as this.
I have reduced the salt and cooking oil out of my diet by a large margin, and the food actually tastes way better. My favorite aspect is the way that I can cook my vegetables without water, due to a huge difference in improved taste and flavor--just keeping in the NATURAL flavor instead of washing it out--and also with the fact that I can get more of my nutrients out of my vegetables for myself and my wife and kids.
I am also personally proud to have American-made cookware in my home. And by the way I have done my own research on the sourcing of the Kitchen Craft and Lustre Craft products and the components including the steel used are in fact made in America. Not just "assembled" in America but 100% American made. Also very hard to come by.
I have found by my own experience that this is a very high-quality product and you will get excellent results if you use it properly. I highly recommend it.

Years ago I worked in Child Support Enforcement and at that time was told that the Salvation Army often helped located relatives. I do not know if this is still the case, but would recommend you contact the Salvation Army and inquire if they do this. You might consider a private investigator or placing an ad in the town/city where the individual last lived as alternative routes. Good luck to you in your search.

If your relative went to the US he must have had work there. Could you try to find him through professional organisations and by asking anyone you can find, who is in his line of business?
Hope your search goes well.

Is the cold water prohibition only for when you are doing the monthly cleaning? That would make sense-only hottest water is going to clean and (possibly, depends on how hot your machine gets the hot water) sanitise the drum and all the parts exposed to soap, sand, grit, etc.
I have a front load machine that heats its own water, goes up to 90C (194F) which is just below the boiling point. My machine user guide says to run an empty load on a full wash programme at the 90C temp to clear all the soap residue and to sanitise the drum, door, etc. Works a treat, my machine is about 8 years old and still running great.
When I lived in the States I had a top-load washer, the owner's manual also recommended that once-a-month hottest temp clean.
I think the worry you have about shortening your machine lifespan is valid. Not getting all the residue out of your machine will shorten its life.
Another good maintenance tip is to check the inlet filter (usually a small mesh screen in the hose connector. You'd be amazed at what I used to find in there once a month, wow! Sand, soap scum, leaf bits...all kinds of little things that will block the water flow.
