Making Fabric Placemats and Napkins

  1. I cut the placemats on the border.
  2. Cut the batting and cotton fabric the same size as the printed fabric.
  3. I stitched the printed fabric and plain fabric together on the wrong side.
  4. Stitch 3 sides and turn over (right side out).
  5. Put the batting inside and neaten the corners.
  6. Fold the unstitched side inwards about 1 cm, stitch and neaten.
  7. On the top, stitch according to the pattern or on the edge to hold it firm and iron.

You can use a piece of burlap and fray the edges. Draw your pattern on a piece of graph paper to get an idea of how it will look when you stitch it.

You can back it by sewing on a piece of felt.

Cut 6 fabric fronts, 13x18 inches. Cut 6 fabric backings, 13x18 inches. Cut 6 pieces, 13x18 inches, of interfacing. Layer placemat pieces front and back facing together and interfacing on top (see photo), pin in place.
