Never buy an avocado that rattles. One that does is already overripe.
There are 2 ways to ripen an avocado. You can sit it on your windowsill for a few days until it is ripened. Or the best way is to place them in a brown paper bag and keep them at room temperature. This way will take anywhere between 3 and 6 days, depending on the ripeness when you bought them.
If you need to speed up the process, just pop a banana, apple or tomato in the bag as well. Once ripe, it will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Never refrigerate unripe avocado. They will not ripen in the cold.

Unripe but unbruised fruits like papaya and avocado frequently go bad without ripening. How do I prevent that?

Put them in a paper bag with an apple for a day or two. The gas that the apple produces cause the avocado, etc. to ripen more quickly.
