May 14, 2004

Prescription DrugsIf you don't have health insurance just contact Merck Medco and they will give you free prescriptions. You and your doctor just fill out a form. Several other big pharmaceutical companies also have this same program.

Sometimes, not always, it's less expensive to buy a smaller mg. and double it-or vice versa. The only way to tell is to "shop" for the drug on the net and then tell your druggist about what you've discovered. If he/she won't agree to call the doctor to get a prescription to change your current prescription to what you're requesting, and they don't have a good explanation as to why they won't do it (or if they're "too busy"), it's time to change druggists. If the doctor won't agree, talk to him, tell him/her about your financial problems, if he/she won't help, it's time to change either or both!

Most druggists don't want to lose a "valuable" costumer and will agree to help out. Personally I haven't run into that problem of them denying my request without a good reason. However, I did get the tip to do this from another druggist at a different drugstore, not the one that I always use. I guess it just goes to show, if you don't ask, they won't offer. Good luck-I know how difficult it can be.

I will try this once again, for some reason my reply attempts to this request haven't been posting.

Look under the budget category on 2-16-04 for an entry titled "Need Help With Expenses and Prescriptions". Another lady had a similar request and received some good replies that may apply to you as well.

Here's the article Tawnda was referring to:

Need Help with Expenses and Prescriptions

I am trying to find someone or organization to help me with any free items to help me. My husband passed 3 years ago. I am disabled and my medication costs me 100%. Medicare pays 80% for dr. care (thank God). I just don't have enough to meet my common needs. I know there are others worst off.

I, too, have low income. I saw in my drs. office a notice that drug companies will give you a drug card to buy their brand of medication and it is only a few dollars co-pay. You could locate the drug company telephone numbers by calling 800 information. You do have to meet their income criteria which I did and they sent me a drug card shortly after I filled out the application.

Some pharmaceutical companies actually provide FREE prescription drugs. Some have income requirements and some don't. Go to www.phrma.org for a list of programs. You contact the maunfacturer of the drug, tell them your circumstances, and ask them about the requirements.

What usually happens is that you have to take a form to your doctor to sign. The doctor signs it and usually in 2-3 weeks you get the drugs which are sent to the doctor, not you. Hope this helps you. God Bless.

Merck-Medco is one company that will provide you with FREE medication. Just contact them, get the form and fill it out with your doctor.

You may also be able to have the prescription issued for double the strength, and then cut the pills in half. This way, you get twice as many doses from the same bottle of medicine. DON'T ASSUME THAT THIS CAN BE DONE WITH YOUR SPECIFIC MEDICINE! You must ask your doctor! And rather than using a kitchen knife, it's worth the $5 or so to purchase a pill splitter so that the halves are exactly the same size. My mom gets her cholesterol medicine this way, and it costs her half as much as usual!

Get generic prescriptions whenever possible. Then go to Walmart - I understand that they have something like $10 deals on generics. I also did not have prescription coverage at one point and got drugs through the drug assistance program with the help of my MD. You can also try local clinics - they often have free drugs on hand....And be frank with your MD about your situation and ask for samples and whatever help he/she can give you here.

MDs often don't consider cost in prescribing unless you remind them of it....

I'm just writing to wish you luck with getting help with the Topamax.
My daughter takes it for Migraines also. She stopped taking it at one time because the side effects are horrific. After trying something else
that didn't work she went back on Topmax. She rode it out and it
was worth it. Shes back at work now. Good luck.. and if you get the side effects.. talk to your Dr. She wishes she hadn't stopped taking it
the 1st time.. it would have saved 3-4 months time.. and time off work.

My husband regularly takes several prescription drugs. I have seen where sometimes you can get a rebate coupon for up to $30 on prescriptions - does anyone know if there is a website that you can check drugs you are taking to see if they qualify for such rebates? All of his co-pays just doubled so I am looking for ways to save some money. He already requests samples but they are not available for several of his medications. Thanks.

go to http://www.needymeds.com. Look up each of your husband's medications. You most often can request free medications from the pharmacuetical companies Patient Assistance programs.

I do a google search for the drug by name. Name brand drugs often have a website, and if there is a rebate, that's where you'll find that information. I've done it with three drugs (all name brand), and I've found rebates on all of them. I doubt that you'll find any coupons on generic drugs, but that's worth a try, too, at the manufacturer's website.

There are sites that list rebates/credits when you transer a med RX. I think the easiest way is to call the phar and ask them what type of incentive/coupon they have for transfering a rx.

also, check the local coupon ads - there was one this Sunday for $20 if I transferred an rx to that store.
