Cleaning a Smooth Top Stove

August 7, 2018

A burned hot pad next to a clean smooth top stove burner.I thought I turned on the small back burner on my white smooth top Jenn Air stove. You can imagine my panic when I turned around and saw smoke rising from the front burner where I had left an iron skillet on top of a braided hot pad. I grabbed another hot pad, pulled the skillet and burned pad off the burner to reveal a blackened, burnt on mess. The burnt pad had plastic threading and that (plus the fabric) had melted onto the burner. Another second or two and I'm sure I would have had flames. I was ready to cry thinking I had ruined my very expensive down-draft smooth top stove but, for once in my life, I didn't panic.

Instead, I went to Google and found the ThriftyFun tip site after I googled "help, I left a hot pad that melted on my burner." I read the tips on burned plastic tried one that suggested letting it cool, testing to see what Goo Gone and Cerama Bryte would do. If they didn't work, it was suggested to turn the burner on high again for 12 minutes to see if the rest of the gunk would burn off.

Wow! I literally watched most of the black goo and crust disappear as it burned off. Finally, I turned off the burner, let it cool completely, wiped off the ash, and went after the remaining black spots with Cerama Bryte and a Scotch Brite Scrub Dots sponge.

Sweet Relief! Every speck of the burn is gone and my stove top gleams! The picture shows the blackened, burnt potholder next to the now clean burner! It didn't occur to me to take a picture before I cleaned it, but I wish I had. I am so grateful for this website that turned my disaster into a miracle!

Thanks.

Do you have a smooth top electric stove? I do and have found cleaning it aggravating with the commercial products out there (plus they are expensive).

Be very careful. I had a glass top stove, and it was great, but the instructions warned to immediately clean up ANY split sugar on the surface, as it can cause pitting and damage. Also, never use any type of abrasive pad or cleaners, as this will damage the surface. I used a product called Crema Brite avaliable at hardware stores and some groceries, but it seemed like it was mostly lemon juice and paste.

I would try making a paste with baking soda and lemon juice. This should not hurt the surface, but try in a small spot. Use a washcloth or soft rag to apply and wipe clean.

Cleaning with a sugar cube is one of the cheapest, easiest and best ways I've found to clean the surface of a glass cooktop. Always try your best to clean up messes as soon as possible. (Sometimes its best to wait til the stove top cools a bit though, as I have melted cloths on the element before and it's not fun to clean that off) so what I do is a dampen a wash cloth with super hot water and wipe down the whole surface.

Just enough to make the top damp, not wet. (If its too wet the sugar cube just melts away.) Take note of the stubborn stains and scrub the cube over those areas until completely cleaned away. For clean up of the sugar on the surface just use the same clean damp cloth to wipe it down. It's that easy. For day to day cleaning of lighter stains I use Cermabrite (not sure of the spelling) with the scrub pad privided or just a regular cloth. Hope this helps!

I ordered mine, cermam Bryte ceramic cooktop scraper, from GE. 1-800-626-2002.
However, the package also says Golden Ventures Inc. Homecare Products @ 1-800-578-HOME.

Maybe Home Depot or Lowes may also have them.

Look in the paint department of a hardware store. They'll have single blade razors as well as holders for them because you use them to remove paint from windows. That's what you use to clean your cooktop!

I use an old credit card, and I used vinegar and baking soda to clean. I had a bottle of the "real" cleaner and only used it if nothing else cleaned the top. Good luck!

Baking soda and water do a great job to clean my glass stove top. Rinse well with clear water, and wipe dry.

I bought mine at Home Depot in the appliance department. It came in a kit with the cook top cleaner. Good luck!

What is going on with my stove top? I recently moved and my new place has a white electric stove top that's seamless (ie., completely flat surfaced). The problem is, whenever I use it, huge black marks (they look like burn marks) show up on the stovetop. I thought it was from my cheap pots and pans so I got new ones and it did no good!

What is going on? And how can I clean them?

Use an old credit card or other such plastic to scrape any burned on residue. At Walmart a product called Weiman glass cook top cleaner in a 15oz bottle is what is good for cleaning the glass top. Just reapply if it doesn't all come off the first time around.

Also just in case you are not aware of the type of pots and pans to use on glass; don't use teflon on high heat or aluminum pans. Stainless steel is recommended and no porcelain coated pans (they are usually speckled over another color) or cast iron. You can actually pit the glass stove top if cooking with these and who knows what temperature is safe for using.
