Cleaning a Smooth Top Stove

August 7, 2018

A burned hot pad next to a clean smooth top stove burner.I thought I turned on the small back burner on my white smooth top Jenn Air stove. You can imagine my panic when I turned around and saw smoke rising from the front burner where I had left an iron skillet on top of a braided hot pad. I grabbed another hot pad, pulled the skillet and burned pad off the burner to reveal a blackened, burnt on mess. The burnt pad had plastic threading and that (plus the fabric) had melted onto the burner. Another second or two and I'm sure I would have had flames. I was ready to cry thinking I had ruined my very expensive down-draft smooth top stove but, for once in my life, I didn't panic.

Instead, I went to Google and found the ThriftyFun tip site after I googled "help, I left a hot pad that melted on my burner." I read the tips on burned plastic tried one that suggested letting it cool, testing to see what Goo Gone and Cerama Bryte would do. If they didn't work, it was suggested to turn the burner on high again for 12 minutes to see if the rest of the gunk would burn off.

Wow! I literally watched most of the black goo and crust disappear as it burned off. Finally, I turned off the burner, let it cool completely, wiped off the ash, and went after the remaining black spots with Cerama Bryte and a Scotch Brite Scrub Dots sponge.

Sweet Relief! Every speck of the burn is gone and my stove top gleams! The picture shows the blackened, burnt potholder next to the now clean burner! It didn't occur to me to take a picture before I cleaned it, but I wish I had. I am so grateful for this website that turned my disaster into a miracle!

Thanks.

Use Dawn and Baking Soda to Clean a Smooth Top Range

I have metal stuck to my glass cooktop. The metal is copper off a pan. While cooking the pan got stuck and I am able to remove pan, but the metal is still stuck in the glass cooktop. I tried cleaning with ceramic cleaner and also scraping the residue off with a razor blade - carefully. Still the metal is there in the glass cooktop.

Has anyone experienced this with an induction cooktop before? How to remove the metal?

Steps to Remove the Stain: Squirt liquid Bar Keepers Friend directly onto the stain. Moisten a sponge with plain water. Rub the stained area gently. Repeat if necessary until the stain is removed. Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels.

My black marks seem to be under the glass. The surface is slick. I got that with a scraper, Dawn, and the cooktop cleaning liquid they sold me. This happened shortly after buying it. Any ideas?

Make a paste with 4 tablespoons of baking soda plus a little water and spread it on the stain. Place a warm damp rag on top and let it sit for 30 minutes.

Wipe the area clean. If the stain persists, make another paste using 4 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of distilled vinegar.

I would use baking soda and lemon mixture on this. You make a paste and put this on the marks on the stove. Let it sit for a bit and then lightly scrub this and wipe it clean.

Spray the stain with the Easy Off oven cleaner, or similar brand. Cover it with a glass pot lid or any pot lid that can withstand the heat. Turn on the burner until it gets red hot, then turn it off after four or five seconds.

Let it sit until the burner cools. Then uncover and wipe off with a scrubber or you can use the razor blade. It should come right off.

Softscrub is excellent. You have to shake the container vigorously before applying and then wait 5-10 minutes. Use the abrasive side of a sponge or an abrasive pad and gently rub, increasing force gradually.

I use Weiman glass cook top cleaner and it does a nice job. You can find it at WalMart in the grocery department.

Use ice and a straight blade on a angle as not scratch surface. Let ice sit for about a hour and then go back and forth with blade going back to icing. Wipe down in between.

We accidentally wiped a cotton dish towel across our new, black glass cooktop when it was hot and a baked-on residue formed.

Suggestions? Thanks!

Try making a paste of baking soda and water. Apply and leave on for at least hour, or maybe over night. Then scrub off. The baking soda shouldn't scratch!

I have tried everything, baking soda, a razor, and cook top cleaner. I am left with this big black stain that won't budge. Now what do I do? There has to be something that will remove it. Believe it or not I have even tried oven Easy Off. Anyone have any answers? Please help. I wonder if hot steam would do any thing?

Spray the stain with the Easy Off. Cover it with a pot lid. Turn on the burner until it just gets red hot, then turn it off. Let it sit for about a half hour.

Then uncover and wipe off with a scrubber or you can use the razor blade. It should come right off.
