The nectar you put in does not have to be colored. Pickled beet juice has vinegar in it, which may not be acceptable. Just mix the sugar and water (four parts water to one part sugar), you don't need color. If your feeder has no color to draw them in (most feeders are red with yellow), you can tie some red ribbon on the feeder to catch their eyes. Once they discover it, you won't even need the ribbon.

Hummingbirds will reject beet sugar over cane sugar. That is only the first negative. They live on sugar water for energy to eat bugs.

Vinegar is acid and pickling uses vinegar. I thought you were joking. Don't feed them acid.

No. Vinegar could burn their tiny mouth. Besides, color is not needed. Tried and true, please stick to what will help feed them which is sugar water only.

Hello,
Please do not use it. It will kill them. There is too much vinegar. Please use the regular Hummingbird recipe with sugar & water. Do not add any color to it at all. If you want color in your feeder please buy hummingbird food at your local garden store. Thank you so much for asking before you put it in the feeder.

Hummingbirds are attracted to the red color, but it does not have to be in the food. The red feeder will attract them. The food should not have any coloring added to it at all.

Also, Cookie17's recipe is too strong. Instead of a 3:1 ratio, use a 4:1. 4 cups water to 1 cup sugar. And don't make up too much at a time. I make up 1 gallon at a time to keep 6 feeders full (I have tons of hummingbirds coming every day).
