Homemade OxiClean Recipes

December 7, 2011

Ingredients for homemade Oxiclean. If you are anything like me, you spend too much on laundry products each month. I especially would splurge on stain treatments that were overpriced, as I found their generic counterparts to often be ineffective or too diluted to cause any real savings on our monthly budget.

In comes homemade Oxi-clean:

Materials

Keep a jar of this next to your laundry machine and let soak in the stains for 15 minutes to overnight.

I have not had any problems with color bleeding, but as always test a small spot on clothes you may be unsure of, as to not have any surprises.

You should either mix this up each time you're going to use it, or keep it in an opaque container. The reason hydrogen peroxide *always* comes in a dark brown opaque bottle is that exposure to light changes it chemically so it stops working.

I thought I would try your recipe for the homemade OxiClean: baking soda with hydrogen peroxide, and water. How much water should be added to the mixture after you've already mixed the ingredients together?

I use 5 gallons of hot tap water, and 2 T each of hydrogen peroxide and powdered dishwasher detergent. I guess you would substitute the baking soda for the detergent.

Soak overnight and wash as usual in the morning.

Add one scoop to every load. There should be directions on the package.

Make your own oxi-clean using 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup peroxide, 1 cup warm water. Mix in a jar and shake well. Add it to your regular load, or pre-soak for the night.

Works really well on stains! We love it. This works as well as store brand.

What is the recipe for homemade Oxiclean portable stain remover in that little purse size squirt bottle?

The recipe we have used for stain removal is an 8-ounce bottle of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4-cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) & a drop of hand dishwashing liquid (just a drop or two no more). Mix & dissolve all well, put in spray bottle & use immediately, storage will cause it to leak from the spray bottle. This has not 'bleached' any fabric or textile that we've used it on, but always test first.

Treat the stain & allow to dry naturally, repeat if necessary, stains & odors aren't always fully removed the first attempt. This works by a chemical reaction between the ingredients so is best used within about 15 minutes. It works for urine stains also, cat/dog/human.

Did you ever see the OxiClean infomercial? I have the basic recipe for a clone, but I need a source where I can buy sodium percarbonate which is the main ingredient.

Oxi-clean is about 70% sodium percarbonate and 30% washing soda (sodium carbonate) with some fungicides added.

You can order sodium percarbonate online. Search out SP on Yahoo and Google.com and you'll find many sites to purchase this great product. You might consider co-oping with some other homemakers and go in together on a purchase to split among you. Hope this helps,
