It looks like a red clover mite or a red spider mite to me.
Some web sites listed are from commercial pest control companies but they have best information on bugs.

www.moyerpest.com/.../are-these-red-bugs-dangerous

www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Red-Spider-Mites-Organically

  • i thought it might be the red harvest mite (chigger) but changed my mind as the shape/legs do not appear to be the same.
  • I hope it is the red spider mite as these are much easier to eradicate and they most found on plants outside. If the bugs are forming a web then it would be the red spider mite.

  • If it is the red clover mite here are some facts about its behavior (from university website):
  • The red stains they leave when crushed isn't blood. It is pigment from their bodies. Clover mites eat grasses, clover, and other plants. Not blood.
  • Clover mites are not known to spread or carry infectious diseases. They are also not a pest known for carrying harmful bacteria from your trash cans to your stored foods or food prep surfaces.
  • Clover mites are known to stain furnishings, curtains, and cloth items with their red pigments. If you value the items in your home, you're going to want to keep these tiny red bugs out. But getting rid of clover mites and keeping them out of a home can be extremely difficult.

The picture is a little blurred...if it looks like this creepy crawly, it is a red spider mite:

ww2.rspb.org.uk/.../a-1001-things-you-did-not-know-about...

They are icky!

If that is what they are and they are outside...one of the best solutions (NO CHEMICALS) is to get lady bugs to eat them:

www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Red-Spider-Mites-Organically

If you google buy ladybugs and your town, the closest location will pop up. I personally don't buy them via mail...I know they probably come from far away anyhow...but it is the allusion of buying locally :)

If they are in the house, wash them away with warm water and a few drops of any dish soap. That will usually kill the bugs and eggs--especially if they are on houseplants. Do this in the bathtub (if on a plant) then bleach out the tub when you are done!

Good luck!

I would say this is a red spider mite. It is part of the spider family and can be a mite or just a red spider.

looks like a red spider mite like others had said. No harm whatsoever to humans in any sort of way, but they are known to stain furniture, drapes, and fabric items with the red pigment on it.

I have tiny red and brown bugs in my apartment. I've been living here for 2 years and haven't had any before and it's driving me nuts. How do I get rid of these tiny red and brown bugs? Where did they come from? Please help, my lease is up in 2 months. I'm not taking my bed or couches or it will start all over.

Lots of baking soda on everything, in all drawers and in corners of shelves and under pots and pans, dishes, everything. Under couch cushions, under the couch itself. on pillows, in the linen closet.

Bugs/insects (a lot of them) breath through their skin. The baking soda clogs their pores. They can't breath. Now wash everything, even your clothes. All of them. Then vacuum the carpet, shelves, drawers. Wrap the vacuum cleaner bag tightly in plastic and throw out. Do NOT keep this in the house. If one bug lives it will get out and lay eggs.

Now steam clean the carpet to get rid of the eggs. Steam clean the couches and chairs and mattresses too if there is an attachment. This will get the eggs. Scrub all the drawers and shelves.

If your lease is up in 2 months and you intend to move. This is the time to start packing. Sprinkle packing boxes with generous amounts of baking soda and pack with just washed items that are wrapped tightly in plastic. If you are not moving just be aware, to really get rid of bugs it is truly like moving out. One must move everything, wash everything in the washer in HOT water, scrub everything with hot water.

Putting vinegar on the baking soda helps for the carpet and upholstery and mattresses. Even if you see them only in one area, clean everything.

Hi JazzyMe. I agree with all but the wash in hot water as it shrinks clothing. You can put items into the dryer on hi heat 30 - 45 minutes.

Sounds like maybe chiggers. If you Google "how to get rid of chiggers" you will find several helpful sites. Good luck!

They also could be from a plant. Do you have any around? May be spider mites. Check with Google and you'll probably find answers. Good luck!

It could also be bed bugs... they also nest in PC's, wood, and not just beds. here's a link to a good website I found. Also I've attahed some pics of what they look like and some pics of someone that had bites. Yuck. I really hope that you don't have them. My son had them in school, they were just terrible.

Wash your cabinets out with soapy warm water, then then let it dry then go over it with white vinegar and let that dry.
