Saving Money on Livestock Feed

March 2, 2005

Sheep and Lamb on FarmHere is such a money saver you need people to share with! If you go to a day old bread store and ask if they have any "Animal Feed" racks of bread for sale. You can get an entire rack of bread, buns, rolls, snack cakes, tortilla's, chips, etc. for 5.00. If they say no, ask when the best time is to get one. They won't sell it for human consumption though.

Where are some locations where you can buy this stale bread for farm animals?

You didn't say what state you live in, but here in Southern California we have bakery outlets. The bread is still good for human consumption, but they do sell it for discount prices.

We have been trying to get growing on our new homestead, but are fighting a battle with herbivores and weeds. What can we still plant in southern Missouri in July to have some supplies and livestock feed this winter? (We use no machinery and grow organic.)

Any ideas for cheap, easy fencing?

You can plant summer rye or wheat & some field peas to eat & freeze, call your county extension office for more free info,we used electric fencing to keep out animals, tie something(cloth strips) on it so they can see there's a fence there, spray weeds with vinegar, good luck.

My husband and I go to the dumpsters behind the food stores and get lettuce and apples for our Emu. I cut up the apples and freeze them.
