I don't know what your counter is made out of, but sometimes plain rubbing alcohol works. Try that first. Fingernail polish remover works sometimes too.

WD-40 has taken Sharpie marker off of many many things from plastic to glass in my home. It should work on counter tops too.

For getting out the Sharpie, try Greased Lightening, works for me. I use it for almost everything.

Believe it or not, today my 1 yr old wrote all over my walls with Sharpie. I tried everything I could think of. From Murphy's oil soap, bleach, everything imaginable. Well, when my kids were going outside I sprayed them with OFF and said to myself, hey why not.

It got it off in seconds! Even took off Sharpie marks that had been on things for months! Try it! It's awesome.

I got some permanent marker ink on my laminate desktop -- probably made from Formica (just wipe to clean). I tried Fantastik and CLR but those didn't work. I figure Formica should be non-porous so these are only surface marks. So I decided to try rubbing it off with a Staedtler pencil eraser -- and that worked like a charm!

We had Sharpie permanent marker on corion counter tops. Write over the Sharpie with dry erase marker and wipe off. It really does work!

We have white quartz counter top and the wife got permanent Sharpie all over it. Used regular cleaner at first and it was just fading it. Read this thread and we tried Goof Off.

Presto gonezo! Worked.

I was sweating it there for a minute.

I know it's kind of weird, but milk worked for me! You have to scrub hard though, and it starts fading away!

I can JUST NOW attest to Barkeepers friend for getting permanent marker off counters. Removed a few letters in four swipes of a sponge. Awesome!

If you are allowed to use rubbing alchohol on the surface, that should get it off. A magic eraser will, too; but follow the manufacturers directives as to whether it will dull the shine.

(It shouldn't with a quick, not-too-hard rub?)

Melaleuca makes a product called Solumel that takes off permanent marker without damaging the finish.
