Getting Rid of Skunks

March 11, 2015

Getting Rid of SkunksI have read that adding ammonia around the yard, under the porch, shed, etc. will keep skunks away. I believe I have a family living under my shed. When is the best time to add the ammonia?

The best way to get rid of a skunk is to hook up a light that will shine all night under your porch. Skunks hate light and they will pack up and leave. Keep light connected up for a few nights, he will make his home elsewhere. No need for chemicals or poisons. Skunks are nocturnal and hate light.

There's a skunk hole near the woodpile. I need to get rid of the skunk so that we can get wood out for use this winter. The smell is still around, too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Skunks do not like loud noises so if possible, set a radio near the hole and play it loudly esp. at dawn and dusk when it may be coming and going. Moth balls thrown down the hole may work or they may do as my skunks did, just rolling them away.

Placing set mouse traps (you don't need to bait them) around the hold might work. Skunks, other than their smell, can be desirable as they eat grubs and other insects.

I am looking for ways to keep skunks away. I saw someone suggest using coffee grounds, but how do you use them? What are the bowls of vinegar used for?

I know of a product called Shake Away Small Animal Repellant Granules, although we have never used it. Its active ingredient is 1% garlic oil and 99% calcium carbonate(baking soda) and Urea (animal urine) and water. This product is available online for 20 oz. is $17.99. But, what I would do is go to a Rural king store and buy Fox Urine. I know it sounds crazy, but it is what we used to get rid of our groundhog in one of our outbuildings.

It was literally busting the concrete up inside the building as it burrowed! I took the nasty smelling stuff and put it on cotton balls and put them inside of a knee hi pantyhose. I put this in the hole where we figured he was or had been. No more groundhog. This costs about $7. Animals are afraid of predators. So, he supposedly thinks there is a fox around, so he leaves. Hope this helps.

How do I get skunks out from beneath the house, without a professional exterminator? My 7 mo. old puppy now knows what a skunk is.....first hand! Needless to say she got sprayed right in her face. After the old tomato juice, baking soda, vinegar treatment, I'm glad to say she is smell free. As for the skunks under the house...they're still there.

If you have skunks under your house just get a bright light and hook up outside under porch and turn on every night. Skunks are nocturnal and will just leave. They hate light.

There are electronic devices you can buy that emit a sound skunks don't care for and they stay away. Do a search on Gogle or go to Amazon and you can find them.

Another option is a dog. A mid to big size dog. You could also just ask at a Lowes or Home Depot and they may have something.

How can I discourage skunks from coming onto our property?

There is this thing called "Synthetic Predator Pee" & it repels animals from the area because they think they may be hunted by their natural enemies. The only problem is, you have to re-apply it each time it rains.

I have a second idea. If you or a friend has a cat & they use a natural, biodegradable cat littler (like S'wheat Scoop-made from wheat, Worlds Best-made from cornmeal, Or Feline Pine-made from pine, or the new biodegradable Arm & Hammer litter made from corn fibers) These are now sold in most grocery stores. You can mix the dirty cat litter around in the litter box, then pour it around the edge of your property, or where you know skunks like to go. Hopefully the smell of the cat will keep the Skunks away!

This cat litter will naturally biodegrade, & in a year or two you can plant flowers there, but you should never grow vegetables where you place the litter. Also, some people buy plastic owls that have heads that move & sometime they can keep birds & other critters away.

Never use Hot Pepper outside because if someone's pet gets in your yard, the hot pepper can get in their eyes & they can dig their eyes out because of the pain. I used to recommend hot pepper to keep varmints away, but so many ThriftyFun readers wrote to me about the dangers, that I always warn people now!

I had this problem a few years ago. I called animal control and they told me to use moth balls around the outside of the yard and bushes, this worked. If you have any pets, make sure to place the moth balls where they can't get to them.

I just saw a show about skunks on our PBS channel. They recommended a boom box, on low, with the bass at its highest level. Point it toward the area where they are hiding (this was under a porch) and only play it at night. Worth a try and won't harm other animals or the environment!

Pebblesru4, unbelievable that your local animal control recommended moth balls :-o Not only are they poisonous to any living creature (including your pets and children) but also cause respiratory problems and pollute the area they are placed :-o They are only meant for a completely enclosed chest, box, etc, to keep moths from eating woolen clothing! Hopefully your animal control is no longer suggesting this!

You could try this. locate where is entrance is. Skunks are nocturnal so wait until he leaves the area under your cabin and close it off with wire mesh sheet metal or some other product he cant penetrate.

Do not hurt the skunk. Check internet as to when babies arrive in your area. Use care not to move if there are young. Skunks are beneficial for many reasons. A loud radio under the house will move that critter elsewhere. I had the same thing and made friends. It was delightful! If you have a dog that might like to chase or catch the skunk, that lil' black and white needs to move on.

OMG! LOL Don't upset or scare the skunk! LOL I've never had this problem, and so can laugh (and I am believe me!). But seriously, Muttmom was right.

And yes, if you can make friends with the skunk they are amazing animals. I had a pet skunk for a while (mine was de-scented tho, and when I had to get rid of it, I gave it to a local wildlife sanctuary where it would be kept safe) and he was such an amazing animal to have around. Not exactly like a cat, although similar. But he was amazing.

I wish you luck getting him out from under your house. But as long as he doesn't get upset or scared you shouldn't' have too much trouble. Foxrun41 also had an good idea as far as closing off the area when he comes out to feed. But before you close it off, make sure there aren't any babies in there waiting for mama to come back.
