Cleaning Baked On Food

May 24, 2007

Baked On Food in Broiler PanThose little square plastic tabs that are used to close bread bags are wonderful for scraping baked-on food from casserole dishes and pots and pans (including those non-stick teflon pans). They don't scratch! I even use one on the surface of the stove if things have spilled and have gotten hard and crusty. It's also a great way to clean a glass top stove. Use and toss. There's always more where that one came from.

Fill the burnt pan with soap and water and add a fabric softener sheet. Let set overnight and wash as usual. If it is a stubborn burn repeat the process.

Easy Off oven cleaner works great on my s.s. pots and pans when burned food gets on them. Just spray, wait and clean out with dry paper towel.

I heated onion soup with milk and let it boil over. I immediately soaked the pan in hot soapy water. I cannot get the stain off my pot. I have hand washed it, used steel wool, run it though the dishwasher multiple times and nothing works. Help please!

Pour some white vinegar into the pan and sprinkle in a small handful of salt and rub the stained away with a cloth or sponge. It might remove the stain and discoloration.

You might try lemon juice if the vinegar doesn't work. First, though, put water in the pan and get the water hot and boil again. This should take the milk stain up or at least make it easier to clean out by making the scalded milk come off the pan. Heat works sometimes when elbow grease does not.

Also, baking soda scours well without scratching. Dampen a sponge, then put dry baking soda on and scrub in a circular motion section by section, adding more as you go. Scalded milk is one of the worst. Good luck!

How do I clean a scorched pot?

First thing I would try is add some baking soda or regular dishwashing liquid and some water. Then boil the mixture for about 15 minutes. I would also gently scratch the bottom with a wooden spoon to loosen the burnt food.

If that's done, pour out the goo and let the pan cool down a bit. Then use brillo pads to scrub away the last burnt spots.

Lots of good suggestions on here in archive but method I use that works really well and is super easy is to fill the pot above the burn line with water. Add approximately 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup of salt. Bring it to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Empty the water and the burned on gunk will peel off using just a spatula and your nylon scrubby sponge. Unfortunately if you discolor the outside of a light colored enameled pan the damage is probably permanent. Cleaning the inside is easy and an aluminum or stainless pan can usually be cleaned with steel wool or Brillo pad.

I have always read to pour enough coca-cola soda over the area and let it rest, and recently tried it on a pot I thought I had to throw away, and it worked like magic! After I had let it rest for awhile, I used a brush and it easily came off.

I was very impressed! I did scrub it a bit before I tried this and removed most of the food residue, then covered the bottom with straight soda...no water or anything and just let it soak, and presto.

Put a new or used dryer sheet and warm water and let it soak. Scrub with the dryer sheet. Works like a charm.

I cannot remove Pam spray residue from a cookie sheet once it is baked on. Food residue can be cleaned with no problem after soaking with soapy water.

Soak the pan in hot water with Cascade Liquid for dishwashers for a couple of hours. It should come off.

I have some expensive cookware and the manufacturer help line told me to never use cooking spray on them. They are not the non stick kind. The spray will build up over time and will be very hard to get off I was told. I have some other old non stick skillets and I have to use cooking spray on them or food will still stick.

The spray is build up on those I suspect. If I don't cook on low temperatures everything will stick non matter what type fry pan I use. Can't even cook in iron skillets. Very frustrating.

There are certain pans one never uses cooking sprays on but you have to use oil based coatings, like cast iron. I use steel wool and "elbow grease".

And I thought I was crazy wandering what was going on with my pans. It's the spray! I have soaked-boiled went through a box of SOS pads and it's the freaking spray. Thank for the post because I wont use the spray again.

It took for ever to get it off my cast iron skillet and then I had to season it all over again. The spray is gone today.

If you have burned on gunk in a pan, soak the pan or burner ring in dishwasher detergent. Just put some in the pan, add hot water, and let sit for a few hours or overnight. Stuff will come right off.
