Recycling Used Motor Oil - soda bottle funnel in milk jugIt's grass mowing and garden plowing time. When my husband is going to change the oil in the mowers or tractor, I save a plastic soda bottle and a gallon milk jug, that has a top that screws on, for him to use to put the oil into.

We take the oil to the solid waste convenience site when taking the recycling and household trash. The oil goes in the oil barrel for recycling.

Supplies:

  • 1 gal milk jug with a screw on top
  • plastic soda bottle
  • case cutter
  • paper towels
  • plastic grocery bag

Steps:

  1. Rinse out the milk jug and the soda bottle.
  2. Using a case cutter, cut the soda bottle so you can use the top part for a disposable funnel.
  3. Recycling Used Motor Oil - cut soda bottle to use as a funnel

  4. Place the funnel in the milk jug and pour the oil into the jug.
  5. Recycling Used Motor Oil - insert into the opening in your milk jug and pour oil into the jug

  6. Use paper towels to wipe out the drain pan which is one of my old aluminum pots.
  7. Place the oily paper towels and the funnel into a plastic grocery bag.
  8. Recycling Used Motor Oil - wipe out the container used to collect the oil with paper towels and place in a plastic trash bag along with the plastic bottle funnel

  9. Tie it up so you can put it in with your trash.
  10. Recycling Used Motor Oil - ready to recycle and dispose of the trash

  11. At the convenience site, pour the oil into the oil container for recycling. Put the empty milk jug in the trash.
  12. Recycling Used Motor Oil - take to a waste disposal site and add oil to the barrel

Used motor oil is recyclable. If you change your own motor oil, pour it from pan into an empty windsheild wiper fluid bottle (with screw top) when you are done.

There are many local auto shops and recycling centers that will accept your used motor oil and oil filters so they can be properly recycled - refined, reconditioned or reprocessed. It is completely free to you. Do not toss into the trash can or recycle can at your home.
