Removing Tangled Hair from Jewelry

December 9, 2013

I had a mangled mess of hair ALL around my necklace. I tried burning it but that stained my necklace. I didn't want to try the hair removal cream. I finally tried a pumice stone and lightly rubbed it over the hair, and it took it off quick! No damage

I wear a gold chain around my neck all the time and it often gets a lot of hair in it. Anyone know an easier way to get the hair out than trying to pick/pull it out with my fingers? Thanks in advance.

Use tweezers.

Is it the chain clasp (the kind you pinch to open) your hair is getting stuck in? If so just have a jeweler replace the clasp with a 'barrel clasp' and you'll have no more problems ;-)

I hold mine over a flame for 2 seconds.

I use a small pair of scissors and/or a straight pin to carefully remove the hair tangle.

Use the flame of a lighter or candle for one or two seconds and then wipe it down with a soft cloth. If it's sooty, a little toothpaste rubbed on and then rinsed with water will shine it up.

Good luck.

BE CAREFUL with the match method. I had the same problem with hair in my 14 carat gold chain. I used the match method and it burned my chain in HALF. Don't try it!!!

Pumice stone. Lightly rub over area where the hair is and it comes off quickly. Another thing is to soak it in Nair hair removal cream for about 5 minutes.

Most likely your gold chain was not entirely gold or merely gold plated. Gold has a high melting point.

My 14k Gold Chain handles flame without a problem because it is 100% gold through and through.

That should be a pumice stone, which can be used as a light abrasive.

I cannot believe how good the pumice stone worked

This caused the chain to turn black, even with just a quick flame; haven't been able to get it off completely. I've tried several things...

Pumice stone ... it's a lightweight stone usually used for hard skin... abrasive

I am assuming you mean your hair tangles in the clasp? If that's the case all you have to do is have a jeweler replace it with a barrel clasp :-)

You are correct about my hair getting caught in the clasp. This barrel clasp sounds great. I'll give it a try.

You'll enjoy how easy it is to open and close too, tallblondenurse ;-)

You can even try putting on a bit of tape-it won't hurt real gold!

Use a razor to shave the hair off. Its quick, easy and wont damage the chain.

How do you clean a gold necklace that has hair tangled in it. Gold chains get hair wrapped and twisted around them when you have long hair.

I keep a small bottle of the cream hair remover, like Nair around to place my necklaces in when they have tangled hair balled up around them. Take the cap off filled with the cream.
