Bleach Has Made My Clothing Pink?

April 12, 2006

A pink stained shirt.I bought an off-white (sort of really light beige) colored shirt recently. The first time I washed it, it came out with a couple of purple splashes on it from another t-shirt in the wash I suppose. I bleached it lightly to try and get rid of the stain. Immediately after I submerged it in the water and bleach solution, it seemed to turn a really light pink color. The stain came out but now it's this different color. Is there anything I can do to get the pink out? I'm sure that the pink is not from the stain, but a reaction to the bleaching process.

The best way that I have found for this kind of problem is to get a dye remover like Rit. If it is an allwhite shirt it should come right out. Another thing I use is Shout Color Catchers. I use one in each load of laundry. I spend about $3.50 every other month on a box and get it from the Dollar General Store.

I soaked my granddaughter's shorts in bleach to get rid of a sun cream stain and now they are all pink patches.

Bleach has removed the color. You could try dyeing them a darker color

See if you can find Oxyclean crystals and Zout...some Walmart carry both and follow the directions EXACTLY to clean the pink spots. Dry outside in the sun (not in a dryer). The sun part is critical to the equation.

It may take several treatments, but it usually works. The one time it didn't work was on a knitted sweater that had rayon or some funky fiber in it.

I just had this problem with a white shirt i bleached but I didn't know sunscreen and bleach had this reaction. The whole shirt turned pink! I was able to solve the issue by leaving the shirt in really really hot water, bleach, and green apple dish washing soap. i let the shirt soak in a bowl out in the sun a few minutes (10/15min.) then i took the shirt, still wet, put it on a hanger and put it directly in the sunlight. After another 15/20 min. the pink has completely vanished! The Sunlight is definitely critical.

Please ignore the people saying you've removed the color, this is wrong. Chlorine bleach has a chemical reaction with certain chemicals, most notably sunscreen and "brighteners" found in some laundry detergent, which makes the mixture turn bright pink.

What you need to do now is wash until you're sure there's no sunscreen left, then go back to bleaching or using or another stain remover (but not both).

I gave up as my whites seemed to get pinker and pinker! eventually I rinsed out and left the (very pink) pants in the sun... once BONE DRY - THE PINK HAD VANISHED. Bright white.

I tried this and worked perfectly only difference I didn't put out as was not sunny but still worked by soaking for about an hour in boiling bleached water and green dishwashing soap. Thanks for this

I have 6 poly/cotton white shirts that turned pink after applying bleach to yellow staining from sunscreen. What can I do to rescue the situation? I can't believe I've ruined 6 shirts.

Try soaking the shirts overnight in a 5-gallon pail filled with the hottest tap water you have. Add 2T each hydrogen peroxide and powdered dishwashing detergent. Wash as usual the next morning.

There is a chemical reaction between the chlorine and sunscreen. Per thread you are not alone - www.styleforum.net/.../bleach-turned-a-white-shirt-pink...

On recommend there said, try soaking your shirts in bleach for longer.

You could also wear the pink shirts for around the house or as pajamas too if it does not work out.

After internet search I tried 3 different cures, lemon juice, vinegar and washing soda I soaked 3 pink shirts overnight and then washed again none of the treatments made any difference oops. I will try the dish washer powder and keep you posted

Vanish oxiaction works! My shirt had turned pink due to bleach. Dipped it in vanish and hot water for 3 hours and its gone!

I washed my whites using bleach and borax as I wanted to ensure they didn't slowly turn gray; the nylon material came out fine but all of the cotton turned pink! Not splotchy pink...perfectly, evenly pink.

Problem is I don't want them pink. O tried the hot water, peroxide, liquid dishwashing detergent and dried in sunlight. Didn't work. Will try Vanish Oxi Action next!

Vanish Oxi Advance worked a treat. Soaked the bright pink shirt in a warm solution for 15 mins and it went white again!

Use vanish for whites. Soak in hot water and sprinkle vanish over them. Leave to soak for a couple of hours. Should come out

I used Rin Ala, a fabric whitener, by mistake. It made my blue colored T-shirt pink. Please help me to recover it's blue colour, it is brand new.

I am not familiar with this product. It sounds like you have bleached the colour out of the shirt, and there will be no way to recover it. I think you should contact the manufacturer and see what they say.

Alternately you could try dying the shirt a dark navy blue. If you go for a light blue, it may just turn purple, unless the shirt is very, very pale.
