First Aid Tips

May 5, 2009

First Aid Tips, Woman Practicing CPRA friend gave our married daughter who has 2 small children this tip. Always have a red cloth hanky clean and ready in case of a bloody injury. When our grandson was hit on the forehead and started to bleed profusely, she got the red cloth hanky and held it on his injury.

After taking him inside the house to clean the wound and check to see if it warranted a doctor call and/or visit (which did require 4 stitches), she proceeded to use the same red cloth to clean his injured area. She turned him away from any mirrors, so he couldn't see the injury, ran warm faucet water on the cloth so she could check on the blood flow. Then she got him relaxed with his favorite beverage while she called in. Because of the red cloth hanky, he didn't realize he was bleeding and never got scared, because he never saw blood.

Later as they drove to the doctor, he held his own red cloth on the injury. Everyone at the doctor's marveled at how brave he was so he naturally didn't seem to mind the stitches too much. Amazing how not seeing blood (as you might on a white cloth), helped calm him as well as his young mom.

When my boys were getting them often I used Neosporin by the gallon...almost.

I use lemon juice, and I just heard about the miraculous cures of honey. Lemon juice on a bruise gets rid of the bruise, or tomato juice. Just put it on the cut or the bruise.

Peroxide, soaking in betadine solution for 3 minutes and then neosporin or triple antibiotic, then cover until healed changing dressing often.

Always keep the cut clean by washing it daily and putting sugar on it, then wrap it up with a band aid. This will do the trick!

My favorite trick is using Desitin, a baby ointment for diaper rash containing zinc. Wash your cut thoroughly, dry, put a large amount of Desitin on it, and bandage. By morning, the cut should have started to mend and the soreness will be gone.

Unpasteurized honey is supposed to be the better choice. Heard about this from a veterinarian.

How deep is the cut? If you do not need stitches you can do the following. Keep it clean and dry. Use neosporin and a band-aid during the day. At night, remove the band-aid and let it get fresh air. Re-apply neosporin and band-aid in the morning. Repeat this process until it is healed.

Nobody has so far suggested aloe! aloe vera does wonders. I just had a cut in a crease and did not have a treatment; it took forever.

In these days of superbugs, it is important to cover up a cut.

I have heard that pepper works! (As in salt & pepper -not hot pepper!! Oh dear, the very thought!)

When the cut has healed I dab on some Vitamin E oil onto the wound to prevent scarring. I prick with a pin a Vit E capsule and use the oil from there.
Hope this helps.

The pharmacist told me to use a product that has a name something like Liquid Bandage. I buy the CVS brand so I cant remember the exact name. its a liquid that covers your cut and enables it to heal without getting infected.

I cant be sure, but I think it is similar to super glue. It smells like nail polish. But I would NOT use either of those products in its place as they may not be sanitary, etc.

I hope you will try to find this product. You will be VERY pleased. You can wear it and its invisible.

Do you know you can get first aid tips through the internet? I swallowed something and then consulted the net and found out that the item was small enough so the doctors couldn't do anything but wait until it passed through me.

If you have a small cut that won't stop bleeding, like a cut received while shaving, use tobacco instead of toilet paper. It congeals and stops the bleeding. One side effect is a tobacco hit, but it really works.

Wash cut carefully and apply chopped or mashed raw garlic. Cover with a slather of honey and bandage. Continue until wound is healed.

Many injuries can result in broken bones, especially if paired with swelling and sharp pain and it can be difficult to diagnose at home. It is important to avoid re-injuring the spot as this can change a hairline fracture into a full fledged break.

It is best to go to a healthcare professional as soon as possible to have x-rays done and any breaks set correctly.

Staying with my aunt recently, I had a rash on my foot which was sore and weeping, but could find no antiseptic in her cupboard. I nipped off the top of a garlic oil capsule with my fingernails, and squirted it on the affected area, then went to bed. Next day, the sore place was clean, dry and starting to scab over.

If you don't have a plaster (bandage), sellotape, wound round the affected finger several times so that it sticks to itself, will work just as well at containing and then stopping the bleeding. You do need to be a bit careful not to wind it round too tightly, though.

I often have a wound that is larger than the pad of the standard bandage. To make the pad cover the wound, I simply cut off one bandages adhesive part, then lay it down on another bandage with the pads touching.

Two band-aid bandages, one with one of the adhesive ends cut off and set on top of the other so that the absobant pad length is doubled for larger wounds

Keep all your first aid stuff in a small fruit basket with a handle. Put your peroxide, bandages and gauze pads, etc. Then it will be easy to carry with you on picnics or to the park.

Anyone who has children knows some kids scream louder after being hurt, especially when they see the blood! I know I have a couple who are that way.

So I now use a red cloth when they get cut so they can't see the blood.
