Cleaning a Marble Floor?

November 20, 2006

A marble spa tub and floor in a beautiful bathroom.I'm new to the cleaning field and don't have a lot of money for supplies. What should I use to mop a marble kitchen floor with? I used a baking soda and water soultion and it left a film I'd never thought I'd get rid of.

Don't use vinegar or any acid on marble! It could ruin the surface. I have seen biodegradable dish soap and warm water suggested on other sites.

Use a cleaner designed for marble. Using the wrong kind can etch or leave a film on your marble tile. And yes it can be expensive to restore.

As long as you use the right cleaner it is easy to care for marble.

  • Dilute dish soap with warm water. Cleansers that are too acidic can actually damage marble tile, which means you shouldn't use products with lemon, vinegar, or bleach on it. ...

  • Apply solution to the marble. ...
  • Wipe off tile and thoroughly dry. ...

How can I clean the marble floor in my bath room? I haven't sealed it since it was in stalled 5 years ago and now it looks like it has all water marks on it. I use hair spray and am wondering if that could be the cause. Someone please help!

Use a solution of 1 1/2 cup Ammonia to 1 gallon very warm water with a tiny ammount of dish soap and use this to strip your floor of the hairspray on it. Hairspray is just about pure lacquer and water sitting on it will turn white.

You need to get that off, let dry then use the marble floor sealer on it again.

According to my Queen of Clean book, she says to seal real marble w/ stone sealer when it's new because its very susceptible to stains. Wipe up spills quickly because marble absorbs moisture. It is also easily scratched by grit. Clean it regularly by sweeping it first and then using a soft cloth or sponge w/ a solution of mild liquid soap and warm water to wash it. Do not overwet the marble, instead use damp cloth or sponge and keep sponge clean while you work. It's a good idea to rinse marble and dry it w/ soft cloth after washing.

Do not use acidic products such as vinegar or lemon juice as they etch marble. Other things to avoid are scourers and solvent based cleaners. If you find spots that are not responding to washing solution, sprinkle a little 20 Mule Team Borax or baking powder and rub w/ damp cloth or sponge. You can also use a commercial marble polish available at hardware stores and home centers. Hope this helps.
