Whatever, you do not use heat on the area that smells like urine. the heat will only make the smell worse. I learned it the hard way!

Try mixing cup water, 2 tbsps of baking soda & 1/4 cup of white vinegar together in a spray bottle. Spray on the stain & rub with a cloth to remove excess moisture, do not use disinfectants as it leaves a lingering small of ammonia which will encourage the cat to keep peeing there.

I have been told steaming may set the smell into the carpet, give this mixture a try.

Oddly enough I've searching for weeks for a home remedy, no chemical type solution for this problem. I've tried several suggestions found all over the place on the web... Some listed mouthwash, others peroxide, vinegar, baking soda, etc. So, fed up with so many options I filled a spray bottle with an entire bottle of peroxide and whitening mouthwash, sprayed away and violá, stink and stain GONE! No residue, no carpet discoloration, no damage to padding... After several fails it was nice to finally see results. Good luck!

Dog pee and cat pee is horrid and hard to get rid of. I normally mix white vinegar with some bleach and spray the area. This will clean the area and get rid of the smell. A lot of time if you spray this area on a daily basis the animals will stop going there to pee.

They are just makring their territory and that means that more than one goes there to pee in the same place as another one.

Are you in an apartment? Have you asked your landlord to see if there is something he/she knows of to clean the area?

Is this concrete or dirt?

Are these people who live in the building and let their animals pee there?

If that is the case, perhaps have a building wide meeting and ask that people use a different space for their dogs and not let their cats outside (I know that one will cause a huge fuss, but I am all about cats being indoor pets, not going out--but that is me).

Wishing you all the best! I hope you find a solution.

Lots and lots of Cayenne pepper! Cats can't stand this spice!

Several questions that only you can answer will determine which suggestions you might be able to find helpful.

1.) Is this area concrete or grass/dirt/gravel?

2.) How large an area are you talking about? Is it just a small area under/near your window that could be sprayed with some sort of solution? And maybe sprayed for several days in a row or every few days for a few weeks?
3.) Are there shrubs that some solutions may harm or kill?
4.) Have you notified your landlord and they are not taking action?
5.) Is this a public walkway?

Perhaps you can decide what sort of action you can take depending on the answers. I have tried or heard or read about some solutions that might work for some areas.

1.) Spread pine cones around the area. If you do not have access to pine tress for free pine cones you can place a pine cones wanted ad on Nextdoor.com, Freecycle, Craigslist and probably find lots of free cones. This really works and is usually free.

2.) Mix half and half water and white vinegar a spray bottle and spray directly on the soiled area. Must be done everyday for a week to keep cats from returning and then a couple of times a week and then once a week for a while. You can use stronger vinegar solution but if you spray several time and then occasionally it should not be necessary.

Do not use any product that has Ammonia as an ingredient as this will only attract more cats.

Information from a vet:

Warning:
A popular piece of advice for discouraging cats is to use cayenne pepper. Don't. Though it's true that cats are averse to the spicy powder, they could actually go blind if they get it into their eyes. Use other deterrents that will not harm the cat.

One of my cats had a urinary tract infection and peed in my son's expensive Reebok runners. They are a black mesh, and not the leather shoe. How do I get the smell out of them?
