Definitely seal and cover tightly while steeping or all your alcohol will simply evaporate. Maybe a canning jar.
Dear Hollison, Please read entire recipe and don't laugh! I'm sure you'll all be surprised by the RESULTS! Just happened on this website and noticed your question! Have you had any LUCK?? I happened on a far simpler recipe back in the early 80's and has DEFINITELY been tried and trued. Far less complicated but I'm positive just as fine an end result! Only for one bottle of brandy however and I have never tried to alter IT! Here is MY recipe and instructions.
One gallon size ( pickled egg jar?) Thoroughly cleaned c/w lid
One 26 oz or 750 mil bottle of brandy ( I used a mid priced, not cheap)
One good orange ( small enough to fit into jar AS IS! )
One to 1 1/2 cups of white sugar
A couple of feet of fishing line and some scotch tape
Now the rest is quite simple but EXTREMELY important to follow these instructions. Take your thoroughly cleaned jar and lid and pour in your brandy. Next pour as smooth and slow as possible your sugar into the brandy making sure that your sugar forms a pyramid in the middle of the brandy. DO NOT MIX OR STIR!! Next take your orange and with a large disinfected needle or what have you pass your fishing line through the middle of the orange leaving about the same amount of line out each end of the orange.

I need information on how to make homemade Grand Marnier. I had one before, using vanilla beans, lemons, oranges, 100 proof vodka and sugar. But I don't remember the amounts. Can you help?
