Keeping Cats from Peeing on Floor

November 10, 2009

Orange tabby cat on wooden floor looking upRecently, my roommate and I decided to get two kittens. They are brothers and now, they are about 2 to 3 months old. We got them at 5 weeks old, and yes that is young, but they were going to be left in a box on the side of the road.

Flick is fine. He uses the litter box every time. Finn, on the other hand, recently started peeing on the floor. However, sometimes he will go in the litter box. No poop, just pee. Before, he was using the litter box fine. We haven't moved it or anything. Please help. How do we stop this?

Sounds like a urinary tract infection. I have 2 cats and had this same situation one time. Please take him to the vet.

Another thing is to neutralize the area that the cat peed on with vinegar and water. Never use any cleaning product with ammonia as cat urine is ammonia and they will go back to the same spot.

Some cats also do not like to share a litter box or if they think its dirty they also will not use it or it could be he is sick try a second litter box and have your vet check him out good luck and take care.

I have an area in the house that is unfinished and there is a small spot where it is dirt/stone that needs to be covered in cement prior to being completed. The problem is that the cats love to pee/poop on it! I can't blame them, as it probably seems like a big litter pan. My problem is how do I get the pee smell out of dirt? I need to keep them from messing in that area, as it is really starting to smell. I have tried saturating it in Nature's Miracle Urine Remover, essential oils, a hydrogen peroxide/baking soda solution, and covering it with aluminum foil (one kitty actually scraped it out of the way to go potty!) Their boxes are kept extremely clean and there are plenty of them.

Unfortunately I cannot close the cats off from this area. I may try some crushed red pepper as I have heard that sometimes works. Any ideas would be super!

You can try Nok-Out. It is available on amazon and eliminates many odors.

Try a liquid formula designed to keep them from peeing in that same spot. Here is one example:

Do not use the red pepper solution. If cats pick it up on their feet and then scratch their heads they can get the pepper in their eyes.

Please do not use any kind of pepper flakes. It can get on their paws and blind them.

Can you use baby gates to block off the area? Or canyou use those cute metal or plastic things that people use to edge their yards to set up a barrier? I know those are not tall, but they may act as a barrier and the cat's won't want to bother hopping over them to potty.

To get rid of the smell, can you just shovel up the dirt and take it outside and toss it away from the house (or in the trash? Then before you finish the area, use sand or gravel to cover the space and then finish over the concrete?

Hope you can find an easy solution. Prayers and blessings to all!

Will removing the soiled carpet and replacing with new carpet stop my cat from urinating in my house?

No, it wont. That will just cost you money. My cat had the same problem. Take her to the vet she might have a UTI, my cat did.

If the vet says nothing is wrong with her, she is doing it out of spite so get her a bigger litter box.
