Using Old Windows to Build a Greenhouse

July 30, 2009

old windows greenhouseThis is our Garden Greenhouse made of old wooden windows. Nail four together for the bottom. Then hinge two together for the top so that one side opens. Use "L" brackets for holding the top windows to the bottom ones. Used a piece of 1x2 foot wood for bracing, then nailed it to an old end table.

I am looking for free or inexpensive recycled windows to build my own green house. Any ideas where to get the windows?

Yes, look in phone book for home repair or builders. They always have free stuff around they want to give away, good luck.

Try joining your local freecycle online, you can get everything on there!

Talk to a window replacement company. Ask if they have any that have not broken while replacing. But as far as going green it also means the conservation of energy so most of the windows are being replaced because they need insulated themselves.

I have found many on the night before trash pick-up on front lawns in older neighborhoods, especially in the Spring.
A neighbor told me he likes to put things out over the weekend before trash day because he feels good that items are recycled by people, instead of going to landfills. Last week I got 2 full size mirrors from his lawn and someone else got the perfect one before I could get help to go back there.

You may have to go further down towards Oakland, but look in the yellow pages for architectural salvage. They get out the good parts when buildings are being torn down.

My first stop would be freecycle though, I'd bet you have a lot of chapters around you. Good luck

Hey, geting ready within the next 2 weeks to replace my single pane metal windows. I have over 20 of them pretty much standard size and in good shape. Just live in an area where airplane noise is a problem and will be putting in double plane windows. Live in Inglewood, CA email: iris349 AT gmail.com
