If you have extra cinder blocks around the house fill them with soil and put your plants in them. It looks pretty nice. I saw this the other day; a lady even had berry plants in them.

How do you prepare the cinder block before planting? Do you put any protection at the bottom of the cinder block e.g. plastic or cardboard or both, then top up with soil?

I would probably put some weed cloth in the bottom so that water could still escape. I built my planter on concrete, so I didn't need to put anything under the cinder blocks. For future planters, I plan on putting some weed cloth under it to deter weeds.
Plant in cement blocks and add on to cement block raised beds. Use plant trelisses, natural compost from foods eaten, watering system, deer fencing, and the ground underneath.
