I have been given tons of fabric samples too. Removing the paper backing is very easy with a hot (old) iron. Set the iron on very hot and iron on the paper backing. After one or two seconds: peal off the paper. Repeat when required.

Won't the adhesive stick to the fabric?

I have not found using the hot iron method useful, I have had more success soaking the fabric for 10 mins the rubbing it with a damp cotton cloth so much easier, not perfect but very good

I use benzene, pour a little benzene to soak the fabric side and after a few seconds when paper underneath is wet, peel off. Then press the wet fabric against the other fabric side to moisten and peel off that paper.

It works like a charm. I also remove price stickers from bottles or gifts that way.

Does that leave an unpleasant odor on the fabric?

Just be extra careful using benzene as it is a chemical that can cause cancer.

Benzene is extremely flammable and dangerous to your health. Not recommended!

The ironing trick works! I had a whole wooden chest of upholstery samples I couldn't use because of the paper and they are all paper-free now! Time to make some dollhouse furnishings, pillows, and quilts. :)

The ironing and benzene works on cotton and washable fabrics, but if you're trying to remove paper backing from dry clean only silk, then what. If you stick a hot iron to silk it will melt

I just use warm water, a bit of Dawn dish soap, lightly rubbed the fabric and voila, paper is gone. The item was a vintage cotton pillowcases, still in the original plastic bag.
