Making Homemade Granola Bars

May 1, 2010
ganola bars

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled oats (old fashioned)
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • Advertisement

  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup nuts
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 inch pan (don't use non-stick, you'll have to cut them into bars and could scratch your pan). In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients. Make a well in the center. Pour in the oil, honey, egg and vanilla. Mix well. Pat the mixture evenly into the pan. Bake 30-35 minutes until bars begin to turn golden. Cut into bars while still warm (if you let them cool, they will be too hard to cut).

My husband loves the Nature Valley bars, but they can be so expensive. This recipe costs less than $1.00 to make 20 bars versus buying them in the store!

google Birdseed Bars, I think it's under All Recipes. It doesn't SOUND like a granola bar, but you can cut them granola bar shapes. You don't bake. Only 1/2 cup brown sugar (I use half real and half Splenda Brown sugar) and honey. They are chocolately and awesome!

I toast flax seeds and sesame seeds (before using, brings out better flavor and flax seeds are actually chewable), and tweak the ingredients. Original recipes doesn't have flax seeds, I just took out some of the sunflower seeds. I also used some Puffed brown rice in place of the rice krispy. My daughter LOVEs these! If you find the recipe, add the cocoa powder to the liquid, not to the dry ingredients, cook liquids slowlllllly. You can place in a 9x13 or larger pan, press hard and cut when cool (if you can wait that long!).

Does anyone know how to make a homemade granola bar? The bar I buy at the store has almonds, sunflower seeds, cranberries and whatever. Any ideas? I take these to work; don't want a jar of loose ones.

just google granola bar recipes there are tons of them. I personally like the ones I make at home better than the store bought ones. Wrap them in waxed paper or plastic wrap. They don't last long. I use lots of different recipes but try to pack as much nutrition and fiber in them that I can.

Here is a recipe I use and I think it is very similar to the store bought variety you mentioned.
Chewy Trail Mix Bars

3 Tbsp peanut butter
2 Tbsp margarine or butter
6 cups marshmallows
1 cup old fashioned (rolled) oats
1 cup corn flakes
1 and one half cups crisp rice cereal
1 cup raisins or dried cranberries or dried mixed fruit
1/2 cup chopped nuts, I use almonds
1/3 cup roasted unsalted sunflower kernals
1/3 cup unsweetened shredded coconut

Grease a 9 x 13 baking dish, set aside.
Combine peanut butter and butter and marshmallows in a large saucepan. Cook over low heat until smooth (about 5 min) stir frequently. Remove from heat. Add cereal, fruit and nuts. Rub some oil or butter on hands. Press mixture into a 9 x 13 dish coated with cooking spray or greased with butter. Let cool, cut into bars and store in an airtight container.

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13 inch pan. Beat butter, sugar, and syrup until light and fluffy. Blend in egg and vanilla. Add and mix oats and chips. Press firmly into pan. Bake 20 to 23 minutes. Cool a couple hours. Cut.
