Toilet Tank Not Filling?

March 23, 2010

Toilet TankMy toilet isn't filling back up in the tank. No water is coming in. What can I do to clean out calcification, if that's the problem (in the intake hose)? I have had this problem with other plumbing in my house.

Some water safe supply lines will seal themselves off if shocked...This is to prevent a flood if there's a quake...BUT, if you turn the valve handle too quickly, this can often "shock" the protection mechanism into activating improperly...Usually, when this happens, you'll hear the water start to rush in through the supply line and into the tank, then a BANG! and the water will stop flowing into the tank..
Usual solution is to turn off the supply valve at the wall, then disconnect the supply line from the valve, then reconnect it...Then SLOWLY turn the supply valve handle to open the valve....
Believe these supply lines will have an extra sticker on them when new that references something like "flood safe" or similar statements...

Obviously these are more common at stores in quake-prone areas...

ALSO-If you go to turn the water supply valve on and the valve and pipe in the wall start vibrating loudly, that means there is air in the line...One time this happened to me and the noise was like a JACKHAMMER in the house...I'm not exaggerating! I heard it from the garage even though it was in the very back bathroom....This is known as "water hammer" and it also happens with my sprinkler system, whenever the watering cycle ends...
SO don't be concerned if it happens, just turn the valve back towards off a little bit to slow the flow down and it should clear itself...You should see air bubbles in the water in the tank if this is happening as well...

The toilet tank will not refill after the water was turned off. The toilet is also clogged and won't flush after numerous times of plunging. I have refilled the tank with some water, but it still won't flush and the water still will not come on in the tank after turning it off and turning back on again.

There may be something caught further down in the plumbing that does not respond to the work you have done so far. You probably need a plumbing company to clear the obstruction.

If you installed one of the new toilets that uses less water, the handle may be stuck. Ours did. Hold up on the handle with the water valve on and see if it will fill. You can also fill a pot with water; make it a soup pot where you can put at least a gallon of water in it and pour it directly into the toilet bowl.

This should make it automatically flush. If it doesn't then you may have major problems.

I'd go after the clogged toilet first. Since you have already plunged repeatedly, I think the next step is a snake. Many people do this on their own, and you can buy one at a hardware store. However, if it was me, I'd call a plumber, as I couldn't put up with the frustration any more. As for the second problem, the tank not filling - could you have some sort of sediment clogging the lines? The innards of a toilet are not very complicated; have you checked out to be sure that everything is connected? All the little chains and hoses and so on? If you have a second bathroom, you could compare the one that is working with the one that is not, and see if anything appears amiss.

All valves changed but tank or Basin not filling with water. The water valve open but no water flowing. No tissue nor clogging.

How do you adjust your toilet so that there could be more water to fill in the toilet tank? I've tried adding more water but it's not filling up that same amount. Right now there's barely any water in there to flush. Please help!

Have you tried turning the knob near the bottom of the toilet? This knob is also what you would turn if your toilet overflowed & you had to shut the water off.

Open up the back of the toliet tank. There is a fluid master, mine is located in the left side of the water tank. There is a rod that extends to the bottom of the tank with a float attached to it.

Move the float upward to the desired level. This is what cuts the water off when it reaches the desired level.

Is the chain too short or long on the flusher handle?

I can't seem to get mine to adjust. I try to use a screwdriver, but nothing. The problem started when they turned the water off for my entire building due to another unit needing repair. When I flushed the toilet the first time after that it made a loud noise and the I assume air or water pressure in the line caused the fill hose to dislodge completely!

I was able to put that back where it belonged but can't seem to get the water level back in the bowl where it used to be. Any suggestions?

I can flush the toilet, but the tank does not refill. I fill the tank with a bucket and it flushes, but does not refill.

Is the water to the tank shut off? There should be a tap. If turning this does not put water in the tank, there must be someplace where the pipes are disconnected. Another thought - there is a little hose in your tank from which the water should flow. Is that there? If you don't know what I am talking about, take the lid off of another tank and have a look to see how it works.

Perhaps you should call a plumber, or at least get a friend who is a home handyperson over to have a look at it. It could be a simple fix, if it is just in the toilet tank. Toilets are not very complicated.
