What cedar chips are best to repel moths? Can I store a wool coat from the cleaners in a plastic bag?
They sell moth proof garment bags. But I would just put your coat in a garment bag. Then put cedar chips.
I buy my cedar from The Container Store: www.containerstore.com/
I do not store woolens in the plastic bags. They need to breathe. It is important to wash or dry clean them at the end of the season. Moths are attracted to the body oils left behind unwashed articles.
Cleaners have bags for woolen garments so, if possible, ask for these when having coats cleaned.
Otherwise you will need cloth garment bags but you can use a cotton sheet in a pinch. Just try to wrap it around your coat and fasten opening with clothespins. Wrap the bottom so it seals.
Do not use cardboard boxes as the glue attracts bugs.
If your storage area/closet has high humidity you may need to burn a small light bulb most of the; keep the door open or use moisture capture bags as moisture will also harm woolen clothes.
Save space and view clothes easily by using vacuum bags that come in multiple sizes. Take clean folded clothes and place in vacuum bags then just suck out the air with a vacuum cleaner.
To store my out of season clothing, I purchased sturdy suitcases and store my out of season clothing in them. I add a fabric softner sheet inside the suitcases.
My daughter and I just went through this the other day. All her clothes were in a jumble all over the floor. We took them all out and put them on the bed. Then, we sorted through them.
When I change seasons in our kids' closets, I pack up the clothes in a Rubbermaid container and mark the size and gender. When the next season comes around, I can either pass them down or sell them.
Use one of those storage boxes that can fit under your bed. I store out of season clothing there. Right now summer pajamas, shorts, short sleeve jerseys, bathing suits are stored in it.
