Although I am not from SA, I can tell you that we love to go to the River Walk and eat Mexican food with a view.
We don't know the names of the restaurants. Our family just goes to the one closest to the point at which someone says they want lunch.
Haven't had a bad meal there yet.
A friend of mine said to check out the All Day Pass for the river taxis.
She said it seems like one pays per each ride from the posted prices, but it is possible to get an all day pass which isn't too expensive and very worthwhile.

Downtown has tons of places to eat and drink, some better than others.
First off, I want to introduce you to some of the best Tex-Mex anywhere. A block from the Riverwalk and the Alamo, A. H. Burritos on Houston Street is a must stop. I'm probably the biggest fan puff tacos ever had, suffice it to say I think puff tacos are what tacos are meant to be. Puff tacos are shaped like those crisp, crackly things that break into a thousand pieces as soon as you take your first bite. But they're not. Puff tacos are softer, but they're not the soft, rolled up things you're supposed to eat for breakfast. No, puff tacos are the best of the best and A. H. Burritos has the best puff tacos in town. They come in beef or chicken, ala carte (3) $3.65 or as the #10 Taco Plate (2 plus rice and beans) $4.35. Trust me, for under four bucks you'll be looking for a hammock after this. You can always order them on the side with any of their other dishes. Wait, that's not all.

The complementary homemade chips and salsa (hot) are the best in town. The Caldo de Res (soup $3.75), served in a bowl that must hold a quart, comes with an entire garden in it. But, go ahead and try anything that sounds good.

AHB is about a block from the corner of Houston and Alamo, behind FootLocker (used to be Woolworth's). It's a little "hole-n-the-wall" place that most people would just walk by and not even notice. Since it's off the main tourist drag, very few tourists find their way in.

The best burger on the Riverwalk is at the Republic of Texas. Good burger, comes with fries, it's cheaper than our other contender's and you can either sit inside (why?) or right on the riverwalk for great people watching. Republic of Texas is one of the best choices for lunch or dinner on the Riverwalk.

If we didn't tell you about it, you'd never know it was there. When you've been on the road for awhile, no matter how good the restaurants, you're always ready for a little bit of homestyle cooking. Well, CDB is the place in downtown San Antonio. No frills-just good, home-style cooking at extremely reasonable prices (under $4!). In addition to the wide selection of sandwiches and salads you'd expect, every day there are 2 specials - from chicken n' dumplings, beef stew to chicken fried steak - served with a choice of 2 vegetables and bread.

Meatloaf (just like Mom makes) is a staple every Thursday. They're open from M-F from 7am-2pm and deliver breakfast and lunch in the downtown neighborhood from 8-10:30 & 11-1. CDB's at the corner of Houston and Alamo so they're a perfect place to have breakfast or lunch before or after your visit to the Alamo. But get there early, the downtown crowd already knows about them and now the world does too!

Fun Things to do in San Antonio - Take a ride on one of our fine riverboats and experience San Antonio's world-famous Riverwalk. Stop in at participating restaurants, clubs and shops. On the original tour are two points to get off the boat and take a tour of the most interesting parts of the city.. Alamo Plaza (get off at the Paseo del Alamo) and La Villita (get off at the Arneson River Theatre)

The site of the original settlement, La Villita is one square block in the heart of downtown San Antonio alive with artists, craftsmen, shops and restaurants.
If you have some time, please take our two free tours - explore the history of the buildings and visit the shops.

Market Square is a Mexican style plaza, complete with some of the finest restaurants, shops and galleries in San Antonio. Every weekend there's some kind of party or festival going on here. Be sure to put it on your dance card when you visit San Antonio.

If you've never visited Alamo Plaza, chances are you've never been to San Antonio. One of the ways to get to Alamo Plaza from the Riverwalk is through the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The passageway is called "Paseo del Alamo" and is lined with a waterway and tropical foliage. Great for photos and the kids will love putting their hands into the waterfalls.

You must visit the Tower of Americas in HemisFair Park. If you've ever wanted to see San Antonio from 50 stories up, check out the Tower's observation deck. Hope you're not afraid of heights, 'cause it's pretty windy and kind of scarey up there.

I'm a native S.A. of 48 yrs. Visit the small town of Boerne for antique shopping, cute shops, and visit George Strait's favorite Mom & Pop Mexican restaurant, Maque's. On the River, be careful when you visit the River Center Mall at night. Many "gangs" hang out here. The River Walk is basically safe. Go to Cullum's Jazz Restaurant, great margarita's. The Palladium is the newest, coolest movie theater, with leather seats and a restaurant. Across the highway is a gorgeous outdoor mall, La Cantera. If you like the country, drive 1 hr. northwest to Fredericksburg, great German good and pretty country.

Pappasito's on I10 and Huebner is always great! If you are in the mood for great Mexican food on July 4th, you won't want to miss this restaurant. Fajitas, enchiladas, shrimp, great appetizers, delicious desserts..... My husband and I can't get enough of that place.

Willie Nelson will be having Freedom Fest at the Verizon Amphitheater in Selma on 4th of July.

Also, Floores Country Store. This place has some history. See photos on the website- LiveatFloores.com This is in Helotes off 1604 and Bandera (outside the loop)

If you do decide to go to Market Square, Mi Tierra is the Mexican restaurant to go to.

The RiverWalk is also nice- If you like Martinis go to Swig Bar on the River. Best Martinis ever. Half Price happy hour specials.

If you want fireworks you need to go to Woodlawn Lake, Sea World or Six Flags around nine pm and you can see them from the street if you don't want to pay and Woodlawn is free.
