Permed Hair Not Curly Enough?

February 16, 2017

I went to a salon this morning for a perm. The goal was to get some curl for my long semi straight hair. I showed her pictures and we agreed to try with the knowledge that the perm may not turn out exactly how I want. When I left the salon I only had a mild curl.

As my hair has dried throughout the day it has straightened more and more. Does this mean the perm didn't take or will I be suprised when I get to wash it and apply product to it in 3 days? This is my first perm so I am not sure what up expect. Thank you!

If the hair is healthy in all other respects, just under processed, there should be no problem in giving the perm over. A competent hairdresser would take many factors into consideration, including that the hair was previously processed to a limited degree.

If a perm is given to long hair (past shoulders), the weight of the hair can put tension on that hair near the scalp causing the perm to appear lax there. However, if the perm was given properly on healthy hair, there would be just as much curl near the scalp. It would not appear so because of the tension. Proof of this can be seen by cutting the hair short. This happens with naturally curly hair, as well.

Hairdressers are licensed by a state board of cosmetic art examiners. Being licensed by the state does not mean what it use to. A successful perm/ cold wave depends on several factors, the two most important being elasticity and tensile strength. When was the last time you saw a hairdresser test the hair for elasticity and tensile strength before proceeding with a perm?

Long hair takes much much longer to wrap. A lot of hairdressers will cut short the processing time because they know the perm solution has been on the first wrapped hair longer than usual. Hence, under processed hair and little curl. There is an easy way around this but most hairdressers wont do it. That is to wrap the hair using very dilute solution or even water. Only after the entire head is wrapped should full strength solution be applied, beginning with those areas most resistant, usually the nape and temples.

Give me a client with healthy hair, having proper elasticity and tensile strength; and I will give her a perm that will last til it's cut off. It doesn't matter if her hair is down to her kidneys.

I'm so sorry that you have had to go through this. It sounds to me that they did something very wrong. When I got a perm on my long hair in the 90s, I left the salon with very curly hair.

I know that the chemicals can be very damaging to your hair so perhaps you are lucky that they didn't actually ruin your hair. I would ask for a refund and go somewhere else. Even a beauty college should do a better job than that! Good luck.

So yesterday I just got my first hair permed. I just want to permed half below part of my hair as she recommended it as my hair length is a bit passed shoulder, I could say medium. It's big curls. Its looks good after she permed and washed it. Then she blow dried it. I was satisfied with it. It took me two and a half hours.

At around the evening, it started to lose its bounce and curl. I thought it was normal. On the next day, it is more straighter than before. And now it's losing its curl. I'm starting to get worried. I haven't washed it, it's just past 24 hours. I'm waiting to wash it after 48 hours and see if it will get curly or at least wavy again. Will it tho? I'm worrying about it.

I do not think you should even shampoo your hair before contacting the shop and make an appointment for the hair stylist to see and hopefully know how to redo the perm that is suitable for your hair.

I know that long hair has to handled a little differently but you should have some curl if done properly.
The shop/salon should do this over without cost to you if you contact them now.

I would like to know some suggestions. I permed my hair last year. Then I shaved it low to the point where it couldn't be braided, but was not shaved completely off. Now my hair has grown out some and parts of my hair have lost its curl pattern and when I twist or braid it looses out.

Please help me because it's a struggle.

This could be so many things like , chemicals (shampoos/conditioners), medications, age, stress, heat applied, dyes, and the list goes on! You should get in touch with a hair specialist that has great ratings with return clients on this issue .

No 2 people are alike . They need to check your hair and give you a assessment and how to proceed to rebuilding and restoring your crown in glory!

Ok, let me understand your question. it has been over a year since you permed your hair? Is this right? Perms don't last that long and they do grow out. Your hair does grow from the roots so normally the first place you see the perm leaving your hair is at your roots. You also said that yous shaved your hair so that you could braid it. Now that your hair has grown out and you try to twist or braid your hair it seems to fall out. The simple solution is to get another perm in your hair or even a body wave if you want the wave look in your hair. You can also allow your hair to grow out a bit more and get the braids put back in your hair as you had before.

I got a perm on a Friday, but by Sunday it looked like the front of my hair (by my temples) was almost completely straight. I hoped that on Tuesday when I washed it that things would be OK. So Tuesday came around and I washed and styled my hair with a curling shampoo and conditioner then used curling styling products and a diffuser. Areas of Permed Hair Straight After a Few Days - view of straight area of long hair

I went to work for only 3 hours and now I do have a problem with excessive sweating on my face and head from a medication I am taking and I also live in North Carolina where it is hot as crap outside. But here I was again after a few hours with the front of my hair almost completely straight and now the back underneath at the neck area almost completely straight as well. So I'm not sure if the perm was not processed correctly or this is coming from my sweating issue or if maybe there are some styling suggestions that can help, but I'm really disappointed because the parts that are curly are absolutely gorgeous and then I just have these awkward straight pieces.

Please help.

I do not know what type of medication you are taking but I've read there are a number of meds that may have an effect on perms.
Did you tell your stylist that you were taking this medication?

I'm not sure how you can find out if your meds could be the problem but you could probably ask your pharmacist about this.

If the meds could have caused this problem and you did not tell them you were on this medication before the perm, then most likely your stylist cannot be held responsible for the problem.

You may have to wait until you are off this medication to have a new perm and medications can stay in your body for several days after discontinued.

If the meds are not the problem then you should notify your stylish about the problem and see what solution the two of you can decide on.

This really sounds like an issue with the medication you are on that is causing this issue with your perm. There are some people who just can't perm their hair because of the medications they take on a daily basis. I would go and talk with your hair dresser and ask them if these medications are effecting the perm and is there anything that can be done about this.

I have been reading your post onperms not being curly enough.I'm a guy with longer hair, but not super long. It's not even to the shoulder area. It's in great condition and I have lots of hair! Which is a blessing. It's straight as well as thick. I've had perms growing up and they were super tight and I looked like Shirley Temple. Obviously I had shorter hair then probably. My sisters would get perms and body wavesand they had longer hair and it always took and they had beautiful curls.

The guy who does my perms now is great. He knows his stuff, but I never leave with what I really wanted. I want curls and not waves from the root down. I know you can only do so much with perms. My perms take, but never at the top area? From like above the ear area and down I have curls, but never on the top area. It's frustrating to me. He wraps it perfectly and uses many rods, etc.

Could it be the chemicals he's using aren't strong enough? He is using the one that activates on its own with no heat required, if that makes sense. Back in the day we always had to go under the dryer to activate, etc. I feel like I need the old school one? Is there a difference with that?

I'm going back sometime in the near future to have him redo as it's not what I want and I always leave thinking, next time it will be different. It's been about 6 weeks and my hair is healthy and not damaged. I have always asked him if we need to leave the solution on longer and he says no. I am thinking he leaves on for about 20 minutes. He knows his stuff allegedly and wraps it great, but I'm confused. I don't have super long hair. Some females have way longer hair and it seems perms can take on them with curl from root down. Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance.
Cheers!

I got my perm about two months ago. And I started to notice that I have what looks like a rat tail. Some parts of my hair are straight, but not all of it. How can I fix it?

If the perm is this old now you may need to get a new perm. You can try some curling gels to help with the hair to see if this does any good. Use a pick in your hair and do not comb or brush the hair. This can cause damage to the perm and make it straight in some places.

3 days ago I got a perm. The week before I got chop stick curls and loved them, so I decided to go for the perm. I went to the salon for a consultation and showed pictures of what I wanted. Then I went to the salon to get the perm, to say I'm unhappy is an understatement. They used number 2 perming solution and small rollers. It was left on for around 15 to 20 minutes. My hair was in great condition and no medication so unsure what has gone wrong.Perm Not Curly

My hair has a loose small wavy curl, mostly fuzzy.

I've washed my hair and put a deep conditioner on it. I even bought curl spray and nothing is helping. I'm left with this. The salon said they can't do anything and advised me to leave a conditioner on. I'm now left with hair nothing like I asked for and no idea how to fix it. Any advice please.

I would talk to the owner of the salon you have gone to and if they do not fix your hair the way you want it then demand a full refund. You may need to go to another salon to get the help you are seeking. it sould like this salon is not willing to do anything for you so I would get my money back and go to a salon that is willing to help you out.

It seems the type of perm you are wanting is a very light curl so be sure to follow care directions after your new perm.
I believe it would be a good idea to explain your problem to the new technician before the appointment If you have not done so already.
Inform them before going to the studio so they can make the best judgement about time and so forth instead of being rushed at the last minute when you are already sitting in the chair.
