My AC stopped working. I replaced the filter and am still getting no cool air. Is there any way to repair it without having to pay so much money?
You could try putting freon in it. That would be the cheapest way to fix it. The worst case scenario is that the compressor is gone, and that is expensive. In a pinch you can go to sleep in a wet t shirt, or have a cold cloth around your neck during the day.
Is it a central unit or a window unit? If its central, it might be a safety switch at the top or the bottom of the unit. That switch sometimes gets activated when changing the filter out.
You could call some companies nearby if they offer a free inspection and hopefully you come across someone honest.
Our water heater went out and a honest company told us all we needed to do was clean it and it'll work again. Whereas another company told us we needed a new one ASAP. We cleaned the water heater where the flames are and it works like a charm again!

I have a window AC unit whose function knob has broken. How can I get a replacement? It's a Maytag (now Fedders?): service #M3X05F2A-C; serial #LP 241277316Y.
My uncle used to use a old pliers duct taped shut around the metal prong to turn the "dial" when he could't find a replacement! This memory made me laugh...but it worked!! I think he used it like that until the machine finally gave up the ghost!!

If not, perhaps you can find a knob at a flea market or as a trash pick find!
Many of these knobs are generic so you may be able to find a replacement even if it is not an exact model number.
Google used appliance stores with your zip code. Several names should appear but you only want names of small stores so cancel out Home Depot type stores and start calling to see if they might have a knob to fit your AC unit. These stores usually have units that are used for parts and just might be able to help you. Be sure to take your broken knob with you when you find a store.
Better still, if you know of a small appliance store near you then just take your broken knob and start searching. You might have to try several knobs to find one that fits. If you find a close fit that might work wrap it with cloth for a more secure fit to see if it will work. A rubber band might help you check it out instead of cloth.
I have found needed appliance pieces at regular appliance stores as they take trade-ins and usually have several "old" units in their discard area.
Sometimes these discarded appliances can be found at the back of furniture stores and appliance stores.
A knob from another appliance may even work.
If your search is unsuccessful then Pghgirl's method will work. I have wrapped needle nosed pliers with duck tape (painters tape is better) but it is sometimes awkward to use.
This question came to my mind after seeing my brother's air conditioning unit. From what he tells me, his son and a couple of his friends were throwing some pebbles at it. Because of that, it damaged parts of the fan and that was what got me worried.
I think he would be more worried because it seems like he might either need to replace the fan or just do a new air conditioning installation because the unit is hardly working now. How much damage would a chipped fan do if it were to be ignored?By the sounds of this the fan isn't the only thing the kids damaged with the pebbles.
My AC unit compressor is not switching on. It might be failure of a capacitor or not. Any suggestions?

A.c.'s and furnaces are not something for a person to fool with unless you are qualified. About 85% of air conditioner and furnace problems are from people not maintaining them once a year. It takes more than just changing the filter monthly to maintain these appliances. You should have both tuned up once a year. It's no different than changing the oil in your car and maintaining your vehicle.
