For each day you'll be away, pack a full set of clothes: top, pants, underwear, socks in a zippy bag. This keeps your suitcase neat, and it avoids the hassle of digging through clothes at your destination, or even deciding what to wear!
I found that I can put a lot more in my suitcase using the vacuum bags sold for food. I ran out of those and bought the XL zip locks and just rolled the air out and it worked just as well.
It drives me nuts when the straps that hold your clothing gets down under the clothes that you've already packed in your suitcase. Now I always clip the strap to hold them up until I have everything packed in there now.
If you are flying, NEVER put a laptop, camera or other fragile items near the top of a suitcase. Because most suitcases nowadays have little wheels on the bottom, which could help a suitcase to roll off a conveyor, they are always slammed onto the conveyor with the soft top side down, and the wheels up. When making a trip and you need to stop for one night, pack a overnight bag with the things you will need that night. Also, pack one set of clean clothes for the next day for self and other family members.
