Elevating Bowls For Larger Dogs
Our Great Dane pup was at the age and height at which we needed to elevate his food and water bowls. We found an ideal one for him (it even had a shelf for his "toys"!) at a used furniture store and set it up for him.Lo and behold, he got thirsty and dove right in. Kinda. He eventually got used to it, but this photo always makes me laugh!
Keeping Puppies Out of Trash
Puppies are naturally curious and scent-driven, which makes your kitchen trash can irresistible to them. Keep them out by pouring a scant cap full of ammonia into the can. I only had to do this a few times for my pup.
Removing Lint from the Dryer
Re-use your just used dryer sheet to remove the lint from the lint-screen. It grabs the lint easily and it will help preserve your manicured nails!
Bag Styrofoam Packing Peanuts Upon Arrival
Be kind to the environment. Grab a bag when receiving a package with foam packing "peanuts" and place the pieces into the bag immediately; tying off the top when done. Should you have a need to use this type of packaging you have them right at hand.
Use Squeeze Bottle to Water Plants
As much as I love my houseplants, I find it a messy chore to water the ones in high places. I've purchased several watering cans to minimize drips, but they left much to be desired - usually a splash from the well of the can.
A Birthday Calendar as a Wedding Gift
Buy a calendar when an upcoming family wedding is announced and note birthdays and special family dates on it. It's a very welcoming gesture to the new family member, including them in on the "good stuff".
Choose Candle Size For Your Burning Time
We laughed at the "absurd directions" for a large jar candle (20 oz) we had just purchased: "burn candle for at least four hours". We experimented with several and this is what we we found.
More Room in Your Recycling Bin
Make more room in your recycling bin! Step on your 2 litre plastic bottles to remove most of the air and then put the cap back on the bottle.
Address Book for Internet Information
An inexpensive address book is a great place to pencil in passwords for various on-line accounts. "A" is for Amazon and American Express, etc. Using pencil will prolong the life of your book, which should be kept in a safe place!
Two Sets of Measuring Utensils
Two sets of measuring cups and spoons are a must for any kitchen. Use one to measure the wet ingredients, one for the dry. This saves the wash and dry time exercise when cooking or baking.
Plastic Storage Box for Traveling
We are fortunate to be able to travel for an overnight stay at least once per month due to my husband's membership in a golf club.
Combine Two Pairs Of Pantyhose
Panty hose are expensive! This little trick has probably saved me hundreds of dollars over the years! Decide on your most preferred color of pantyhose and buy several pair. When getting a run or hole in one leg, cut that leg off and launder the "good leg" and panty.
Children's Activity Box
Keep an "activity box" on hand. Organizing one day, I took a big cardboard box and filled it with the things that I had available for children to play with.
Save Leftover Paint in Smaller Containers
When you are done with a small glass jar with a screw lid, wash both pieces well and dry. The next time you have a paint job before putting the lid on the can, pour some into your little jar and store it.
Plastic Putty Knife for Kitchen Clean Up
Home Improvement stores offer plastic putty knives in various sizes, sometimes a bagged variety pack of sizes. A small putty knife is a must have for your kitchen cleanup!
Dishsoap Instead of Stain Remover
Small squeeze bottles of dish-washing liquid are wonderful substitutes for the high priced stain removers when prepping your shirt or blouse collars for laundering.
Hair Catcher for the Drain
My husband and I have been blessed with thick hair, which we wear rather long, but this posed a problem with our older home's shower plumbing.
Olive Oil Bottle For Dish Soap
This started out as a treat for myself but has really turned into a money saver. The kitchen sink area became more "elegant" once I purchased a bottle with spout designed for use with cooking oil.
Shoe Organizer For Tools
Short on space does not present a tool/junk drawer type organizing fiasco. Buy a shoe organizer and affix to the wall of your laundry room/mud room.
Buy Dog Toys at the Thrift Store
Pet supply chain stores offer some great stuffed toys for dogs, but so do thrift shops! Look to the stuffed toy section and find well made toys with sewn on material eyes.
Check Outlets with Hair Dryer On New Home Walk Through
When doing a walk-through on a "soon to be yours" home or apt, bring along a hairdryer. It's an instantaneous way to check if the electrical plugs are working. The instant "whirr" will let you know to go on to the next outlet!
Keep Copy of Your Dog License
Dog licenses can come loose and get lost, if your dog is as active as ours, as evidenced by the few I have come across at our favorite dog park. Make copies of your dog's license and the paperwork that came with it.
Hair Dryer to Help Remove Stubborn Light Bulb
Having to change a "stubborn" light bulb from your freezer or refrigerator, not wanting it to break in your hand? Take a hairdryer to it! Aim the air at the base of the bulb's area where it screws in and it will unleash the grasp on the bulb and you are ready to install the new bulb.
Lighter Fluid for Cleaning Guitar Strings
My husband, a guitar player for years, finds that putting some lighter fluid on a cloth and wiping down his guitar strings removes any dust and oil buildup from your hands. This will enhance the life of the strings also.
Wrapping Gifts in Holiday Tablecloths
At dollar stores or shopping after the holiday clearance sales, I try to get a couple of the decorated lightweight disposable tablecloths and store them in my box of gift-wrapping supplies.
