How to Deter Swallows from Nesting in Your EavesI had a bunch of swallows trying to nest in a heat wave. I removed the mud during their construction, but it did not deter them from trying to build. I washed down the soffits and removed all trace of the mud they had put there, but they kept on trying to come back. The soffit is thirty feet from the ground so I taped an Old Spice stick deodorant to the end of my extension pole and applied a coat of deodorant to the window ledges and soffits. In less than two minutes the swallows were gone. Not sure how long it will last, but it sure worked well. All for the price of a stick deodorant. The only downside is the smell of Old Spice on my deck now, but it is better than the mess the birds were creating.

Recycled Disco Bulb Bird DeterrentI am in the P.N.W. where we are blessed with a ton of different types of birds. The downfall to that is they love attacking new plantings and my fruits. What I've been using are recycled disco bulbs I picked up at the local Goodwill for $1.99 and $1.50 each.

Plastic bottle hanging in a tree as a noisemaker.

Hanging Noisemakers In Fruit TreesBirds swarm on our feeds by batches, and peck on our fruit bearing trees. A scarecrow is nothing to them, an idea came when I placed tiny stones on empty pet bottles, tried hanging them on a clothesline connecting to our house.

Keeping Birds from Nesting in a BBQ GrillIn a frantic spring of trying to garden, paint my porch and deck and dodging raindrops, I neglected to check my gas grill! I had put duct tape over the holes on the sides of the cover, knowing I could get visitors.

Red Balls To Deter Birds From TomatoesBirds had always beaten me to my ripe tomatoes, forcing me to pick them green. I found a simple yet effective solution; light-weight, red, plastic balls! When a tomato begins to ripen, hang a red ball directly on the plant next to it.

Keep Birds and Animals Out of the Garden With CDsThis tip doubles as many things. Decoration as well as scarecrow. Take those DVD/CDs you were planning on tossing aside for whatever reason. I used a soldering iron, melted a hole in the edge of the DVD/CD.

Use Magnetic Tape to Discourage WoodpeckersDo you have problems with a woodpecker rat-a-tat-tat-ing on the side of your house? Or birds in your garden eating up your tomatoes, or the big black birds taking over? The film inside the videos or cassette tapes can be used to scare them away, for a while anyway.
