Be Smart When Stocking UpWhile shopping if you stock up on an item that you use only once a year, it's not really a good deal, plus it's probably just going to take up valuable space that you could be using for something else.

Ask Stores About Specials Mailing ListsYou should ask your favorite stores about whether or not they have a mailing list that gives some notice about upcoming sales that are available. Some will have some for select customers so it pays to ask.
Walk to the StoreThis tip is especially for people who live in small towns or near shopping facilities. With the nice weather coming soon, why not try walking to the store, especially for small trips.
Shop At Discount Grocery StoresAs far as the person who wrote in about eating healthy for less, I have a suggestion. We have started eating healthier and I am the "coupon queen". I thought it was cheaper to eat fat too, until I switched. For one thing fruit is much more filling, where chips actually cause you to be hungrier.
Re-Evaluate Your Food Needs From Time To TimeHaving recently gone through our pantry (and throwing stuff out! egad!), we decided that we needed to do some rethinking about what we buy. It does not save money to buy things that you don't eat, no matter how much they are on sale.
Seasonal Theme CandyBuy after the holiday Hershey Kisses on sale and you will have Valentine's and St. Patrick's Day candy at a fraction of the cost.

Be A Savvy ShopperPlan your trip route. Make a list and stick to it. Never shop aisles which have no items on your list. Think those end displays are just there on accident? Nope, they are planned to get you to buy items you don't really need on impulse. You would be surprised how well this works in favor of the store. Never buy on impulse and you will save big time. Before checking out, stop and recheck your cart, See if there is something you don't really need.

Read Your Supermarket Flyers Carefully Every WeekThis weeks special was buy one 1/2 gallon of EDYS' ice cream and get 1 free. (price was $3.99 per 1/2 gallon) Buy 2 gallons and get 2 free PLUS get a $5.00 discount off of your entire bill. So, I bought 4 - 1/2 gallons of ice cream for $7.98 and received a $5.00 discount which lowered my cost to $2.98. That's 75 cents per 1/2 gallon. Where we live you can't even buy a baby ice cream cone for less than $2.25. We tucked all 4 of them in our freezer for a special treat in the future.

Marked Down Onions and PeppersMany times our supermarkets mark large quantities of fresh onions and peppers to such a low price that you can't afford to not take advantage of the purchase. I found fresh peppers at 50 cents per lb. and fresh onions at 20 cents per pound. I washed, sliced and diced them then packaged and labeled them in freezer bags. This coming winter I will have oodles of both to enjoy at a substantial savings.

What are the best buys at Sav-A-Lot?I have started shopping at Sav-A-Lot in my home town but it has been years since I have shopped there. Can anyone tell me of some particularly good buys they have? Thanks in advance!

Frugal and Nutritious Breads and GrainLook for bargains on day-old bread and bakery products. Buy regular rice, oatmeal, and grits instead of the instant and flavored types. Try whole-grain bread and brown rice to add nutrients and variety to family meals.
Plan Meals Around Sale ItemsShop your favorite grocery stores often and stock up on each one of the sale items. Plan your meals around these items.
Grocery List TipsI use the back of an envelope affixed to the refrigerator with a magnet to write my ongoing grocery list. Then when I'm ready to go to the store, I select the coupons I need and put them right in the envelope.

Use a Shopping ListAvoid buying food that is not on your shopping list. People buy an average of one unplanned item per aisle at the supermarket.
Effects on Food Prices Due to Longshoreman LockoutRight now because of the Longshoreman's lock out on the West Coast, ships are lining up off shore. Containers can't be unloaded and shipments going out are stuck either on the docks or back at their source.
Buy Bulk Salsa and Freeze Some for LaterOne of the best deals I've found is buying salsa or taco sauce in bulk containers. Freeze in recycled plastic containers.
