Adding Biodegradable Packing Peanuts to Compost Bin?I have some packing peanuts that my daughter says will dissolve in water. I wonder how safe these are to put in a compost bin. There's about a carrier bag full. Can anyone help? If harmless they seem a great idea.
Plastic Sacks in WWII?I just read a book on the Channel Islands in WWII, which mentions things being kept in a plastic sack. I know Bakelite was around then but was soft plastic? The guy with the sack was a doctor (if that has any relevance).
Using Runny Marzipan? While making marzipan this morning I made the mistake of putting way too much egg white in it. I frantically added extra icing sugar, I didn't have any more almonds, but it still hasn't gone solid.
Is it Worth Buying a Small Freezer?I am thinking of buying a table-top freezer so that I can freeze down things and then transfer them to the big freezer. I'm hoping that the big one won't get so frosted up. Does anyone else do this and if so, does it work?
Information on a Golden Berry Plant?I bought a plant called golden berry. The assistant said it was a sort of tomato, but the fruit is enclosed by a papery shape, looks like a cape gooseberry. If it is are they edible? Any advice welcome.
Discouraging Cats from Defecating in Garden? How can I discourage the local cats from defecating in my veggie garden? Obviously I need to do it without harming them so that means pepper is out and I have a visiting hedgehog so I think that rules out the ultrasound gadgets. Someone has moved in the street with three cats and I'm one of the few here who hasn't paved it over so they all head here. I love cats, but I do want to grow things too.
Microwave Turns on But Doesn't Heat Food?My Delonghi microwave lights up, and the turntable works, but it doesn't heat. Any ideas? Cheers.
Cleaning a Smelly Washing Machine?Just recently my three year old machine has begun to smell really disgusting on the hot wash. I ran Calgon through it, no good. My daughter suggested trying a biological detergent in an empty machine ( I can't wash with a bio, it makes me itch). No good.
Are There Tomatoes That are Green When Ripe? While on holiday in Rome, we bought sandwiches containing slices of green tomatoes. Are these a special tomato or just any old unripe fruit? Thanks.
Vinegar-Proof Covering For Canning Jars?I have started making pickles and chutneys again after a gap of about twenty years. I used to use Porosan synthetic skin to cover the jars but cannot get it now. Does anyone know a cheap vinegar-proof alternative for use on all sizes of jar? Cheers.
Recipes for WW2 Sweets?Does anyone have a recipe for sweets that would have been made at home during WW2 preferably in the U.K. I'm a volunteer at our local primary school and WW2 is our topic this term.
Does a Scanned Negative Result in a Positive Image?I keep seeing these gadgets that scan negatives. Can anyone tell me how they show on screen? When you have scanned them and burned them to CD do they show as negatives or photos? This may be a silly question, but I've always thought photography had a hint of magic in it.
Are Partners Olive Oil and Herb Crackers Vegetarian?I have been given several packets of Partners olive oil and herb crackers. Does anyone know if they are okay for vegetarians to eat? Cheers.
"Over the frosty moorland, The moon is rising high..."?"Over the frosty moorland, The moon is rising high, And out of the wintry silence, The wraiths of Rome ride by." Does anyone recognize this? I first read it years ago and it has nagged in the back of my brain ever since.
