I've had a woodpecker working on my tree; the tree is now dripping water from these holes. It has made a puddle at the base of the tree. Can this be stopped and will this kill my tree?

In March I cut down a River Birch tree because it was splitting. I left the trunk 10 feet high to make a wood carving. My problem is that the tree will not stop seeping. What can I put on top of the tree to seal it?
