Bring water to a boil and add chicken base. Chop all vegetables and add to water. Fry chopped onion in a little oil; drain and add to water and vegetables.
Melt shortening; add 3/4 lb. ground beef. Cook until meat is done. Add other ingredients and simmer 45 minutes.
This is a great hearty, cooler weather soup. We love it in the evenings when the temperature starts to dip down cooler, which will be happening here in Iowa before we know it!
