Making a Chicken Scratch Quilt

April 29, 2013

Complete quilt.Using checkered fabric, polyester fleece, and 2 colors of embroidery thread, I created a prayer quilt for my friend that will soon have major surgery. She has knit many prayer shawls for others in our church, but I believe she will be surprised to receive this "chicken scratch" embroidered quilt for herself.

I searched the internet for images of chicken scratch embroidery and also used counted cross stitch patterns as inspiration for the quilt. I created 9 completely symmetrical patterns so that the quilt has no top or bottom direction.

Embroidery of the 9 squares was done through 1 layer of fabric and 1 layer of fleece. A second layer of fabric was added as the quilt backing after the embroidery was completed. I then quilted through all layers around the border and in between the 9 squares.

Three of the chicken scratch blocks are on the site. Where can I find the remaining 6 blocks? I have been looking for a couple days for them. Where can I find a close up of the remaining 6 blocks?

Sorry - I did not finish my post so I will try again.
You can go to this link on ThriftyFun and read the questions and responses.

This quilt top is made up of several patterns so you may have to search for each one individually.

There is so much about this art on Google that it is difficult to really wade through it all. Someone else may have a better idea but that is all that I can suggest.

You may be able to ask your question on this site and they may help you find the patterns.

Here are instructions for doing this type of embroidery - just in case someone else is interested.

This is a popular pattern and quite a few can be found on Google but not all are large and can be daunting for new quilters.

Here is a site that has some free printable patterns.

I love the prayer quilt that is featured on here, the one with different squares. My question is where can I get a copy of the pattern for the different squares?

Here is a start. You click on the image you like and it takes you to the pattern. Most are free but even if they aren't, if you crochet a lot you can look at the photo and figure out the pattern. I hope that helps.

I would love to make a chicken scratch quilt in memory of my mother, she was a quilter. I cannot find the quilt block pattern for the blocks for me to go by, I am new at this and I don't know how to take a small picture and enlarge it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I love the idea of chicken scratch, but I find the fabric store gingham a little flimsy to take the wear and tear of my family. I often find a "gingham" on a little heavier fabric that is white on the backside and not reversible. Can you tell me where I can find it for chicken scratch?

What you refer to as gingham that isn't reversible isn't actually gingham, it is just basic cotton fabric. Real gingham is always reversible and is on the thin side. Just because fabric is checked or plaid doesn't make it gingham. The fabric you are looking for is just checked plain cotton fabric.

What you are going to have to do is look in various stores until you find that type of fabric. All stores won't always have that fabric at all times and a lot of the time they won't have a selection of colors.
