Bed Making Tips

July 15, 2011

Girl Making Her BedI love it when the air around me smells fragrant. Here's a tip for good smelling bed linens. Find a fabric softener sheet whose scent you love, and cut it in half. Put one or both halves between the pillowcase and the bed pillow (one half on each side of the pillow). Every time you put your head on the pillow, you smell the fragrance just a little. It is not overwhelming. My guests often comment how nice it smells on the guest pillows.

The one thing I hate is stripping the bed sheets and re-making the bed. I have a tip that saves time and adds padding. I put every single fitted sheet I have on the mattress over one another.

Have a bedspread, such as all one color chenille, that is hard to tell where the corners are, making it hard to place on the bed? Take a piece of ribbon or embroidery floss a shade lighter.

From the back, make a stitch, tie if off and leave tails a couple inches long.

Work smarter, not harder. When changing your sheets, begin by tossing your bed cover over to the opposite side, out of the way. Then place your clean fitted sheet and flat sheet on top of your bed, unfolded. Peel off the first corner of the sheets your changing, replace that same corner with the clean sheets, pocket first, then flat over the top.

A bed in the process of having the sheets changed.

I often get mixed up which direction my comforter goes since it has a large floral pattern and the width and length are closer than on a twin comforter. To solve this problem, I pinned a safety pin on the two underside corners that lay at the head of my bed.

I have an easier way of making a bed up. When I make my bed in the mornings, I don't go around the bed five or six times. I do one side of bed completely before going to the other side.

Hubby has oily skin and, being bald, he has no hair that absorbs at least some of the oil on his scalp. I bought several used beach towels at the Thrift Store and made them into pillow cases that I put over the pillow to protect it before slipping on the pretty top pillow case.

My most favorite way of keeping warm is to use flannel sheets on the bed. Apparently it's a good idea because my two dogs love it, too.

I have a king size blanket, recently purchased from JCP. All the seams look the same. How do I tell what goes at the top and what goes at the bottom for a perfect fit?

Lay it out on the bed one direction, then rotate it putting what was on the side on the top. Decide which way you think it fits best, then sew a small colored ribbon in the bottom right corner, or even both bottom corners - now when you have to put it back on the bed, you know exactly which way it goes.
