Valentine's Day Craft Ideas

February 6, 2010

Gift bag made from a recycled Pop Tart box. This is a great way to reuse empty boxes and scraps of wrapping paper and have a beautiful one of a kind gift bag.

Approximate Time: 2 hours

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Cut the top flaps off the top of an empty pop tart box.

  2. Sit the box on the wrapping paper and trace around the bottom of the box. You will then cut the paper about a 1/2 inch wider around than what you traced.

  3. Glue the bottom of the box using your glue stick and adhere the paper to the bottom of the box. Then glue about 1/2' above the bottom of the box and fold the paper up around the sides making sure all paper is flat against the box.

  5. Lay the box down sideways and measure about 1 inch longer than the sides and cut the paper making sure you leave enough length to wrap around all 4 sides of the box. (Tip: I have found it is easiest if you use the pre-cut edge of the wrapping paper to go around the bottom because it is straight.)

  6. Using your glue stick glue all the sides of the box and wrap the paper around making sure all paper is flat. Then you will fold the extra top 1 inch of paper down and glue to the inside of the box.

  8. Take a Valentine Card image and glue to the box. You can use old cards, post cards or their are lots of free download-able images on the web. On this I put an image on the front and a different image on the back.

  10. Use all purpose glue around the image and anywhere else you want to add glitter and then add glitter and shake off excess and let dry.

  11. *Note: You could also add buttons, charms, pearls or anything else you may like.

  12. Once the glue is dried you will punch a hole on each side of the box for the handle.

  13. Finish off with a piece of ribbon about 12 inches long. Thread the ribbon on each side from the outside to the inside and tie with a knot.

Now you have a beautiful gift bag to fill with items for a special friend!

Add a romantic touch to stationery and envelopes you already have, using paper doilies. Cut the corners off of the paper doilies. Use the glue stick to apply glue to the back of the corners.

VALENTINE'S ANGELS

Need old-fashioned clothespins, heart-shaped doilies, glue, markers, gold pipe cleaners, lace or fabric scraps

Using fabric or lace scraps, "dress" the clothespin angel. Use markers to make the face and a bit of gold pipe cleaner for the halo. Glue the lace doilies to the back of the clothespin to make wings. Add stick-on magnet to the back or hang from embroidery thread.

CARDBOARD FRAMES

Need sheets of cardboard, foam hearts, fake jewels, pink or red yarn

Cut cardboard ahead of time for kids so that they have a "picture" hole. Or use tongue depressors to make a frame. Let the kids wind the yarn over and around the cardboard, completely covering it. Tuck ends under. Glue foam hearts and fake jewels onto the yarn and let dry. Tape a picture to the back of the frame so that the face shines through!

Don't forget Fido on Valentine's Day. Create this customized valentine tag. Decorate the heart with a Valentine's Day message, like "My Hero" or "Poodle Power." Seal the shape on both sides with clear contact paper.

Valentine towel bibs can easily be made with just a couple of fabric items. You just take a simple tea towel or dish towel and fold over one end about 5 inches, cut a u-shape in the center and then add ribbing fabric to the neckline with a single machine straight stitch.

This is a way to recycle clear plastic packaging. I created a 3D "love" scene to fit under the plastic packaging. I glued it down on mat board, then embellished it with all sorts of odds and ends.

I then created an easel on the back so it can be displayed for Valentine's Day.
