I'm not sure all states have Bountiful Baskets but it is a great way to get produce from local farms. I order on-line once every two weeks.

The veggies and fruits are very fresh! They also sell breads. I bought five loaves for $10.00, which I froze and they still tasted great. For the $15.00 dollars, I received at least $50.00 of produce. Google it: Bountiful Baskets.

Where I live in South Dakota we have HyVee, and Sunshine, and then of course the WalMart Supercenter, and from what I have heard the new Target way on the other side of town. I haven't checked that store out yet, because I have to depend on public transportation to get places. When I look at the weekly ads for the two main grocery stores I rarely find anything that is lower priced than at WalMart.

The main things that I noticed are cheaper than at WalMart are frozen pizzas and pop(soda). If a person takes the ad from the other stores to WalMart they honor the prices. I have never been one to go from store to store because a couple things are cheaper there than at some other store. I'm so close to WalMart that when it comes to taking a cab, it is considerably cheaper than to go to one of the other stores.

I live in Massachusetts. I buy my groceries online at Peapods, a division of Stop & Shop. By placing my order in the middle of the 7-day sale time I am able to take advantage of both weeks.

Thus more savings. Also, Wal-Mart advertises their grocery sales online here. Check it out.

Hi Robin I'm in the St. Louis county and you have great prices on meat. There is a Shop & Save, Schnucks, Aldi and Dierbergs grocery stores by me. I go to Schnucks where they have alot of 10 for $10. There are alot of things for the 10 for $10. 3-liter bottles of soda, trail mix, tuna, chicken & dumplings. Hamburger here is $2.95 a lb. Sometimes chicken goes on sale(Tenderbird boneless) for $5 a bag.

Great article Robin.
I just got rid of every sale paper this morning oddly enough so I can't share that with you.
In our area, about 100 miles West of St Louis, we have Country Mart, which is a small chain of grocers that sell the Best Choice and Always Save brands, we have Kroger and Aldi as well as Wal Mart.

I too dislike Wal Marts prices for the most part and hate the hassle they give you in matching sale prices even tho they advertise heavily they will do the shopping for you and make sure they match the prices.

Our Kroger store is resetting and too bad too as they were the ones carrying items you couldn't get at Wal Mart, now I guess they will be more like the big boys. Cut down selection and streamline. We used to get our supplies to make our homemade laundry soap at kroger as Wal Mart didn't sell it. No longer true. I finally found it at Country Mart.
Krogers meat is the best around. Last week they had their Silver Plater spare ribs 1.17 per pound. They do in house ground chuck that is so good, unless they put in on sale for 1.67 and then they fatten it up a little too much for my taste. I would rather pay 2 dollars a pound and have it more lean.

Aldi is a good shopping place for dairy and produce and snack items. Normally not bad on other product but it pays to watch the sales as you can get items cheaper elsewhere if you watch.
Countrymart is good on some produce, they usually always have tomatoes on sale. They also put cottage cheese on sale more often than other stores. Last week their Best Choice canned veggies were .39 per can.

I've lived in VA and WV. Both areas have MOST of the same stores.

I shop Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Kroger's, Save-a-Lot,
and a local meat market that has the best meats ever. You can buy a whole hog, or half or you can buy a few cuts. Prices for meats are about the same as the other stores.

I shop Sam's Club about twice a year. Last October, I spent $1000.00 for a lot of paper goods, dry goods etc. as I do food storage. Like to not got it all in the car - trunk, back seat and floor filled so much that it was hard to look out the rear view mirror :-)

Kroger's has a 1,2,3 Rewards Credit card which I use ONLY for food/gas and pay off each month. Last week I received a $15.00 gift card, and coupons of various amounts for things I had bought previously. I also got several free items like a $5.00 basket of grape tomatoes. My total bill was about $80.00. I paid a total of $34 and change for what I got. Kroger's also has a lot of the 10 for $10 deals, good fresh veggies/fruits and I bought boneless, skinless chicken breasts for 98 cents a lb last week.

Save-a-Lot has some off brands. I will buy one can and if we like it I will buy more. Their canned fruits are wonderful, better than any of the common brands as well as some of their canned veggies. Last week got a picnic ham for $1.00 per lb. That has made 4 meals so far and I still have the bone to cook with beans. I got green grapes for 98 cents a lb. I bought several frozen dinners for $1.00 each. These are for lunches rather than dinner and are just the right amt and pretty good. I bought frozen ground turkey in tubes at $1.00 a tube about a lb I think.

I have found the responses interesting here as well. Thanks, Nancy

I did my grocery shopping for the first AND last time last week. I didn't find the prices to be any lower than anywhere else and higher than Meijer.

My Kroger discount card allows me to have, as a senior, an additional 10 percent savings on what I buy if it's Kroger brand. I have my card registered at shortcuts.com so I don't actually have to clip the coupons.

I found a good deal at Albertson's this week. Mighty Dog dog food is on sale for .59 per 5.5 oz. can. We got coupons last Sunday for 1 free can, and for $3 off 5 cans, which makes them free at that price. Don't know how long this price is good.
