Preventing Food Poisoning

September 14, 2006

Food PoisoningWhile it's easiest to put out a lot of food at once, you can save a lot of waste and possibly prevent some food poisoning by putting food out in smaller batches and replacing it as it runs out. This keeps food from sitting out all day (or all night) so any food that is leftover is still edible.

Refrigerate food left overs in a timely fashion, within two hours is recommended. At serving time, including picnics, foods should be maintained at the proper temperatures. This means that bowls of cold salads should be placed into larger bowls filled with ice to keep them chilled.

Promptly refrigerate after serving time. If foods have been out in the heat for long periods, better to toss them than take a chance.
