Step 1 Turn the washing machine on. Use only hot water for the dye job. Add enough water for the clothes to fit comfortably in the machine.

Step 2 Pour the dye powder into 2 cups of hot water while the washing machine is filling with hot water.

Step 3 Add the dye to the washing machine's hot water.

Step 4 Soak the clothes to be dyed in hot water prior to putting them in the washing machine. Unwrinkle the wet clothes, and place them into the washing machine.

Step 5 Set the washing machine on an extended wash cycle. The clothes need to be in the dyed washing machine water for a minimum of 30 minutes before the rinse cycle begins.

Step 6 Rinse the dyed clothes in cold water until the water runs clear. For darker, deeper colors, wash the clothes in warm water with a mild detergent, and rinse thoroughly in cold water. This will help prevent the darker clothes from bleeding.

Step 7 Hang the clothes to dry.

Clean the Washing Machine
Step 1 Turn the washing machine onto the highest level of water, using only hot water.

Step 2 Add a capful of detergent and 1 cup of bleach to the water.

Step 3 Allow the washing machine to "wash" for the entire cycle.
good luck.

Thank you, kffrmw88! I had been wondering about this, too.

Not sure how you can dye clothes as kffmrw88 says in a frontloader. (once you have water in it you can't open the door again.) Should think it would work well in a top loader.

I have dyed curtains in my Whirlpool frontloader:
It's best to put the dye in the machine first and move the drum back and forth so that it drops throught the holes in drum; this prevents the item 'spotting', then add some water from a jug. Put in item to be dyed and perform a hot wash as recommended on dye packet. Clean your washer afterward as kffrmw88 states.

I have a front loading washing machine. I used to dye things in a top loading one. The material in question is too large for a pot. How do you use the dye in a front loading machine? The water does not come in till all the material is in it and it is weighed and then the water comes into it.

The amount of water added depends on how much weight is in it. I cannot think of a way of doing the valances. Does anyone know how to make it work without it becoming blotchy?

If you google "Dyeing Fabric in a Front Load Washer" you will find step by step instructions for dyeing the fabric and cleaning the washer.
Good luck.

All manufacturers of front loading washing machines have specific things in their manuals which they will warranty cover for.
The are very clear about NOT using dye in their product. They cannot assure you that your next load will not have residue as you cannot fill the washer with bleach water entirely to cleanse the machine.

Contacting one of the companies will get you the standard information they have their people tell you: that you cannot safely use their front loader machines for anything other than what is listed.

So, do it in a kettle on the stove top or beg a friend who has a top loader. Friends pay me to dye what they need. I have a top loader. The package of dye depends on a full washer load of water.
