Total Time: 1.5 hours to assemble 4, not including making yo yos.

Yield: 1 per 18 yo yos

Supplies:

  • pieces of recycled cardboard packaging or file folders for templates
  • assorted cotton Christmas fabric
  • 1 6 mm wooden dowel
  • 1 3mm dowel for smaller tree
  • 4 wooden craft spools
  • hot glue gun
  • small saw - hack saw
  • shoe polish, paint, or other stain
  • drafting compass
  • pencil
  • scissors

Steps:

  1. Cut 18 circle templates ranging in size from 220mm down to 50 mm, in 10 mm increments. I used a compass to draw the circles.
  2. Cardboard templates.

  3. Cut 18 yo yos using paper templates.
  4. Fabric circles for yo yos.

  5. Make yo yos. Follow this link for a short tutorial on making yo yos: Making Fabric Yo Yos
  6. Use brown shoe polish to stain spools for the tree trunks. You may paint the spools using acrylic craft paint or leave natural.
  7. Shoe polish for staining and wooden spools.

  8. Snip a small hole in the yo yo, through the center of the gathered opening, into the ungathered side.
  9. Snipping hole in ungather side of yo yo for mounting on dowel.

  10. Begin to slide yo yos onto the dowel through the snipped hole. Continue adding yo yos until only the smallest remains.
  11. Mounting yo yos beginning with largest.

Adding more yo yos to dowel.

Ready to glue last yo yo on at top.

  12. Glue the smallest yo yo the the tip of the dowel, a bit of glue can also be applied to the yo yo below.
  13. Adding spool to dowel to check for length.

  14. Slide the spool onto the dowel and mark the cutting line on the dowel.
  15. Marking dowel for cutting.

  17. Cutting dowel to length.

  18. Glue dowel into spool.
  19. View of base of spool after gluing dowel.

  20. You are done. Make as many of these cute little trees as you like to create a little grove or to give as gifts. You could also attach a ribbon hanger to them to use as Christmas tree ornaments.

When I made this craft I purchased the spools in a small bag from Joann Fabrics and Crafts. Michael's also carries them.

As to buying them wholesale there are a number of vendors on the internet that offer them.

You say to cut 18 circles templates ranging in size from 220mm down to 50 mm, in 10mm increments. Ummm----220mm? I have 4 Clover yo-yo circles; a 60mm (it's yellow), a 45mm (it's orange-like your example), a 30mm (it's green) & a 20mm (it's blue).

For your 220mm, are you measuring circumference BEFORE or after you've made the yo-yo? Am I to assume that a 200mm yo-yo starts with, essentially, a piece of mat'l that about 9-inches around?
Thanks!

The measurement in mm is of the diameter. Yes the largest one 220mm is approximately 8.6 inches across. I made cardboard templates for a range of yo yo sizes from 10mm to 240, but did not use all of them for this project.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please reply to this comment and I should get a notice and can get back to you. Happy yo-yoing.
