Value of Collectible Dolls and Figurines

April 27, 2021

A figurine of a couple in old fashioned dress. This figurine belonged to a family member and we were told it was of value so we are trying to determine if that is true and who the maker was. Would appreciate any help before putting in a garage sale.

This very much resembles, but is not a match for, Lladro's "Lovers in the Park" figurine. Genuine Lladro will have the makers mark.

You have a nice figurine but I have to agree with Judy, your statue appears to be a Lladro knock-off.
Companies made beautiful 'look-a-likes' that at first glance appear to be the real deal but when comparing the two pieces you will always find differences.

Your figurine will probable sell for more money at your yard sale and, I feel sure, a lot faster. You could try a higher price - maybe even $50 - and see how it goes. Also, no shipping involved.

Here is the same figurine listed for sale on eBay; the seller has Lladro in the title which is a big No-No with eBay but read the description and you'll see the seller is just trying to sell a 'faux' Lladro figurine for the price of a real Lladro.

Can someone help me figure out who made these, where they came from and how old they are? I can not find anything like these. Are they worth anything?

A small elephant figurine and 4 matching elephant tea light holders.

Thanks for the extra pictures. The large elephant appears to also be a candleholder. A side picture would probably show this.
In India, elephants are considered good luck -

"It is claimed that 'an upward-pointed elephant trunk is said to bring energy, luck, prosperity, and kindness'.
I'm not sure that you will be able to find very much information on dates as ceramic figurines like this have been produced from the 1930s and are probably still being made.
I do not believe they are very old, maybe 70-80s, maybe 2000, but that's just a guess.
Most likely there was a paper sticker glued on the bottom that has been washed away over time. May have had those little 'gold' stickers that are required when shipped to the US from China, Taiwan, Japan, and other countries that usually get removed over time.

If displayed properly, these could be listed for $50-$60 on several sites, especially before the holidays. If they do not sell within several weeks, I would consider dropping the price.

Example:
This listing shows 4 small elephants - similar to yours (including the bottoms) - listed for $19.95 plus shipping. However, this set has been listed for over a year and has not sold.

You have a couple of nice dolls but the doll market value dropped many years ago and due to number of dolls listed for sale it does not appear it will change anytime soon.

Similar dolls are occasionally be sold for $10-$35 so you might want to rethink selling these or maybe try selling on sites like Facebook Marketplace, offerup, letgo and start your price as high as you wish. You can always lower the price if necessary.
Shipping is always a problem as these dolls are very fragile and end up broken frequently.

eBay is the largest doll selling site in the world and as of today there is a total of 1,489,828 dolls listed for sale (all brands, sizes, styles totaled). Most of these will never sell - no mater the brand or asking price. The dolls that do sell may stay listed for months/years before a sale.

The largest doll market in the past was for young girls and, sadly, very few girls show any interest in dolls as they are into multi media starting from a very young age.
This only leaves buyers who just like dolls or those looking for a 'special' doll or collectors. Very few collectors are seeking just 'ordinary' dolls so it usually has to be a rare specimen for them to even give it a second glance.
Very few Grandmas are buying dolls for their granddaughters as they are probably trying to sell personal dolls that no family member wants to inherit.

There are presently 224 Goebel Betty Jane Carter dolls (more actually, as many sellers do not show the correct names in their listings) so you might check these out to see if you find one of your dolls listed for sale. You can place a 'watch' on any doll to see if it sells. The asking prices range from $13 - $500 but asking prices are just prices a seller would like to receive for their dolls as only a sold exact same item can be shown as a current value for that item. A sold item shows what someone was willing to pay for this item at some certain date.

Here is a link to the sold items on eBay so you can see what price people are willing to pay for one of these dolls.
Occasionally someone will pay a little more for a special doll they are looking for but you may notice that the majority of sale for this brand is for the cat doll and not a regular doll.

I found a Maggie Collection, Forever Friend doll with a certificate of authenticity, still in its original box in my garage. Is it worth anything?

Companies mass produce these dolls in all sizes, styles and "collections" so they have a very low value as they are so plentiful.

  • If you had submitted a picture it is possible someone may have been able to pinpoint a sale of doll like yours but there are several "Maggie Collections" and also several "Forever Friends" and these are made by different companies but basically, most all of these dolls have approximately the same value.
  • eBay is the main doll selling site (in the world) so this is usually where research for doll values will begin. Only the actually "sold" listings can be used as asking prices can be all over the place and dolls are very slow sellers even at very low prices.
  • These dolls generally sell for $8 to $25 but sellers may have them listed for months and months (I recently saw where a Maggie Collection doll had been listed for over 3 years (listed at $14) and still not sold.
  • I am going to list some links that you can check to see if any of these dolls are in the same collection as yours.
  • This is a similar doll from the "Forever Friends" but from the Pamela Collection - same company and about same value but listing price and not sold.
  • picclick.com/Forever-Friends-Collectible-Porcelain...
  • You can look for your particular doll on Google, eBay, Etsy, iOffer, Letgo, or your local Craigslist as you will recognize your doll from the listings/pictures.
  • If you decide to try and sell your doll, I would suggest you try listing her on your local sites like Craigslist, LetGo, 4Sale, or any other site that has local listings.
  • Dolls usually sell faster on local sites as the person can see the doll and there is no high shipping cost involved.

If you decide not to try to sell her, you may want to consider asking around to see if a church, Habitat for Humanity or another organization who work with families, either in or recovering from a crisis, knows of a child who would love a doll of her or his own. I am a strong believer that every child should have a special toy that is just theirs. Since most mass produced dolls have little market value, this gesture gives them huge morale and karma value. Just some food for thought! Thanks!
