Growing Swiss Chard

April 29, 2009

Swiss ChardI have a very small garden and double use all space. Last year I planted Swiss chard starts between my tomatoes for shade. The chard never bolted. Great summer crop. Will do it again this summer.

My young chard plants have holes in the leaves, about 1/4 inch in diameter. Could it be cutworms? Ho do I prevent them?

Soft-bodied insects (mites, aphids, mealybugs): Mix one tablespoon canola oil and a few drops of Ivory soap into a quart of water. Shake well and pour into a spray bottle. Spray plant from above down, and from below up to get the underside of the leaves. The oil smothers the insects.

It could also be slugs or snails that munch at night, check to see if there is any slime trails. If so, it is those little beasts!

I love the colors of swiss chard, especially with the morning sun lighting it up!
