Hopefully you are asking about cleaning up a small spill.

  • It is usually recommended to use an absorbent like regular cat litter (not scoopable) to absorb the liquid. Spread on spill; wait 30 minutes and sweep up. Repeat at least once. Dispose of litter properly - usually at a designated place in your area.
  • Then you can use something called Greased Lightening or blue Dawn dish-washing liquid as they are capable of cutting the petroleum and washing away the remaining diesel. Use a stiff brush or broom to clean it up. Rinse with several layers of fresh water.

If diesel fuel has been spilled on a piece of wooden furniture or wooden flooring or construction, the odors and fumes may remain a long time. Odor absorbing materials like baking soda, charcoal and kitty litter can help to minimize the smell but it could be difficult to remove it entirely.
