September 5, 2017

Value of a 1927 White Rotary Electric Sewing Machine - manualCan someone point me in the best direction on how to research the accurate and fair value of this old sewing machine for my mom. As seen in the photos it is in a cabinet.

I'm willing to do the work, I really just don't know where to start. I do live in an area that has some little antiquey types of small towns close by (Cameron, NC, Pittsboro, NC). I would appreciate any advice/help anyone can send my way! I have more pictures also, if needed.

Ebay has an ad for a similar machine for $399 Canadian dollars, which is equivalent to about $332.17 US dollars. This machine comes in a case, not a table, so yours is worth a bit more.

It is worth about 300 dollars. If you want to be sure study E-Bay for 2 months on the actual sales, and not just the listed price.

There are several style cabinets for this machine and this along with outward appearances will be the determining points for the value of this machine. Working order is also a factor but repairs can be made to the machine that cannot be made to the cabinet.

These machines are popular so you will always find several for sale on eBay (the most popular auction site).
The problem with items like this is the cost or inability of shipping which means that most listings (anywhere) will be for "pick up only" which means only people in your immediate area would be looking to buy your machine.
That limits your selling area so most of the time you would be just as well off with posting an ad on your local Craigslist or any other local auction site.
Craigslist is very good because anyone interested in your machine can see the actual product. Of course, there are always safety precautions to take when selling locally.
You can always start at a high price ($300 - $500) and lower the price if you are not getting any "takers".
Craigslist is very easy to use just be sure to put lots of information and lots of photos - especially of the cabinet.

You can keep checking listings on eBay but you will always find a wide difference from one seller to another as they are just trying to get whatever value they feel is true to their machine. If you go to the sold listings you will rarely find a machine that sold for that much money. It is generally a good idea to list locally as you control everything and can choose to sell or not.
Here is a link to recently sold machines (just White machines) on eBay so you can see the price differs from what sellers are asking for their machines.

These types of sewing machines when they are working normally sell for around 75-150 dollars depending on the condition of the machine. I would suggest that you try and plug this in and see if the machine even works.

If it is not working then you could ask around 50 dollars for the machine as is.

Your cabinet is in very bad condition and I am not even sure if your machine is working or not. All of this will determine the value the machine is worth. If you check on eBay people list these machines for around $250-400 depending on the case and the condition of the machine. Here on Thrifty Fun, a person posted the same question not long back.

She did come back and tell us she sold her machine for $140 locally and thought that was a very fair price for the machine. Considering I can't find another one sold recently I will take this price and say that the machine value is $140 because that is what a person was willing to pay for this machine not long ago.

Beautiful machine.
It seems you have a true antique so there may be a collector somewhere that would like to have this. One of the biggest problems with treadle machine is shipping as it would be very costly to ship and you will find most sellers list their machines as 'pick up only' so this means a lot of the value will depend on where you live. Some areas may be 'into' older machines and others may admire one but hardly any true 'buyers'.

You should probably read up on some history and then try to find the true age of your machine. Janome also made some White machines but they were called New Home.
New White-branded sewing machines models have not been manufactured since the Husqvarna spinoff in 2006. Husqvarna Viking, Singer, and Pfaff brands are now all owned by SVP Worldwide."

In 1960, White merged with Husqvarna Viking. You can find the age of White sewing machines using the serial number stamped on each machine but you'll have to go to one of the web sites and ask for help. These sites will not help you with value - only information.

www.husqvarnaviking.com/Contact-Us

www.quiltingboard.com/

You will have to join some web sites - this one has paid and free so all you need is the free. No value questions will be answered - only the information you need to be able to describe your machine properly.

ismacs.net/digest.html

This site has a picture of your machine (or very close) and lots of information. Go to 1881 for picture.

www.fiddlebase.com/.../

It is difficult to place a value on your machine as you need a recently sold listing to be able to state current value and the machine should be almost exactly the same as your machine which would probably not happen so that means you will have to list your machine at whatever value you feel is what the modern market will pay.

Here is a eBay sold listing that is very similar to your machine:
It sold for $125 with local pick up.

www.ebay.com/.../264800639114?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006...

Here is another sold listing - 1985 - $1,299 plus shipping ($275) so you can see there is a wide difference in price. This machine is almost identical to yours but have no way to compare overall condition.

www.ebay.com/.../193595493466?hash=item2d1330cc5a...

here is a link to sold listings on eBay so you can check out what people are paying for some White treadle machines.

www.ebay.com/.../i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=antique+white...

This is a link to this type of machine on Google so you can click on any of the machines to see if it still for sale or if it has sold.

www.google.com/search?source=univ&tbm=isch&q=antique...

You can try to obtain current value from this site - I would do this after receiving more information about the machine.

Actually - White machines were made from 1858 through 2006, although later years these machines were not all made under the White name brand.
Looking at your serial number, I believe your machine was probably made between 1880 - 1883 but you can provide your serial number to one of the sites to find the exact year/date.

"Go to the Husqvarna Viking website. Click on "Contact Us" and find the current phone number and hours of operation for the Consumer Affairs Department."
