We are located in Kingman Arizona and I was thinking about starting a dented can store. Can you please give me an idea of how much it would cost to buy the merchandise for a small store?
This is a very 'involved' business to start but if you're thinking about it you should talk with your state, county and city offices to find out all the regulations regarding this type of store. Be prepared to be shocked (some states are more strict than others).
Also, your local Small Business Administration usually always can provide information and usually will have pamphlets with a lot of information that every new business owner needs.
ThriftyFun also receives questions on this subject so check out their answers.

First off you need to check with the country health services in your area. This is a complicated business to open up. You will need to get permits for the store to start off with. I am not sure how much these cost in your area.
Second, you need to find your store space and rent the space.
Third, you need to get your shelves for the store so you can display your stock.
Fourth, you need to find a company that sells dented items.
I do believe that you have to watch the expiration date on cans so that you comply with the law for selling safe food.
I would say to start off with you are looking at around $50,000 to $100,000 to open a store like this.
I just opened my store two weeks ago. It took me about 3 months from the time I decided to open a store until I actually opened. My total cost for everything was $30k. I got lucky with my location as it already had coolers and freezer along with most of the shelving.
What is the average cost of opening a salvage grocery store? And the annual profits? I am wanting info on opening one and supplying in Texas.

What is the total cost for all products to open a bent and dent store?
The cost to open a bent and dent store would depend on a lot of factors - such as cost of renting or leasing a building and how large an operation as well as many other factors.
Step 1
Probably no matter how you cut it - $25,000 may be the very lowest amount you would need. It costs about $25,000 or more to open a store and that includes opening inventory, deposits and opening expenses.
Step 2
It is true that some have done it on less inventory and smaller stores, while others have invested in excess of $100,000 to get underway.
Step 3
There is a lot of information on the Internet about how to open a bent and dent store and it is not just a "turn-key" operation. There are several government license to purchase and get approval before you even start the process. Insurance is another problem.

What many people fail to figure in is the amount of money needed for owners to survive. Do they have other income that supports them so they do not need a salary for even up to one year? This is a big problem and this fact alone causes many small businesses to fail within one year.

Are there any suppliers for discount or Bent N Dent groceries in the Utah/Idaho area?
I did a simple Google search and came up with quite a few hits. I would call the stores directly and ask if they are happy with their current distributor and then introduce yourself.
Most of the prominent stores will usually sell by contract through bidding so it would be best to talk with someone in management at several of your local stores and see what their policy is. You do not say if you already have a store or if you are thinking/planning to open one so you may need to acquire a lot of information before renting a building.
Here is a link that has some suggestions on locating suppliers, etc.
