My washing machine started making a loud noise when it spins. It is a Whirlpool top-loading washer, model number WTW4816FW2. It is a loud rubbing sound. Does anyone know how to fix this?
When a Whirlpool washing machine makes a loud noise when it spins, check the drive pulley first. Check the belt that wraps around the drive motor and pulley to spin the washer tub. Inspect it for damage, accumulated dirt, and general wear and tear. A damaged belt is a common culprit in such cases. If the drive pulley belt is defective, replace it as this could fix the problem.
A loud thumping noise when a washer spins out, usually means the load is unbalanced. To fix that, turn off washer and readjust the load. Turn washer back on to it's spin cycle. If that doesn't fix it, the next step is to unplug machine and take off access panel. Look for broken belt or missing rollers around the tub that it rides against when running. Replace parts as needed, depending on what the problem turns out to be that is the cause of the thumping.
Try putting a shim under the machine and use a level to make sure the machine is leveled. When mine did what you are describing, I found by using a level my machine was off balance. As soon as I got the wood shim to level it out, the problem was solved. Hope your fix is as easy as mine was!
